peppersprayed pregnant woman miscarries

At occupy wallstreet. She was there, chaos ensued, an officer allegedly kicked her in the stomache, and she got peppersprayed. Few days later, she discovered het baby had no heartbeat, supposedly a result of the kick. So sad. I understand the right to protest, but considering the risks, I personally would not have gone. It's so risky, and evidently things turned unfortunate. My heart goes out to her I'm on my phone so I can't link to article. Is someone able to look it up?

  • Wow how scary. I'm so sorry for this woman and I'm not condoning her being kicked in the stomach, I think you need to be smarter than going to these protests that have been turning violent when you're pregnant. I'm even being careful about black friday stuff because I've seen people be hurt from being pushed down.

  • That's awful, I feel so bad for her. But I also agree w/you, why in the world did she even take the risk of going to the protest while pregnant? There have been enough reports of protesters being injured by the police at protest sites all over the country. Heck, I wouldn't even go to a haunted house (high risk or not) simply b/c I wouldn't want to risk getting pushed/bumped/tripped over b/c someone else got too spooked near me. She was only 19yrs old and 3months along. Here's a link...

  • You know what? I don't know if I believe it was a direct result of the kick.  I've had several missed m/c, and sometimes it just happens.  The baby is well protected in there, and behind her pelvic bones at 12 weeks.  She could have been carrying around the baby without a heartbeat and not knowing it.  I guess they could measure and determine when it happened, but that's not always super accurate to the day.  It's sad either way.

I have to agree with this. Miscarriages are so common in first tri that it would be nearly impossible to conclusively pin this on the pepper spray or kick. But it is still a tragedy for any woman to lose a baby.

  • this happened here in seattle, and it was really misrepresented nationally. all the headlines i saw from national newspapers was that "pregnant teen was peppersprayed/kicked" etc etc... but she was 12 wks pregnant, electively part of a potentially violent protest. how was anybody supposed to know she was pregnant? she couldn't have been showing enough for anyone to know this. this was 100% her fault (if the kick caused the m/c).

  • i agree with all of you ladies. its unfortunate she lost her baby, but at the same time why put yourself out there knowing the risks you are taking. i mean come on like one pp said, i didnt even go to haunted houses either for fear of having someone jump out at me, fall on me, etc because they didnt realize i was pg.

That's what I was thinking too.

There's no way that any reputable OB would tell a woman "Yep, the reason you miscarried is because of being kicked in the stomach."   They just don't throw around reasons.

  • She is also homeless, so I'm sure her prenatal care was not what it should be. There are a million reasons why it could have happened. Still sad that a woman got kicked in the stomach, pregnant or not.

  • It's unfortunate. I would be broken hearted to have put myself in that situation knowing I was preggers.

But like others have mentioned when the pregancy is so young your risk for miscarriage is there.

She told the police several times that she was pregnant and attempted to leave.  They held everyone there and wouldn't let her leave.

Obviously I'm a little skeptical, but what would you expect someone to say had occurred as they try to gear up for a lawsuit? This is one version of what happened; I'm sure there are others. Did the police also force her to camp out in a park (probably after hours, and therefore illegally) in November, in Seattle, while pregnant? Miscarriage is difficult, but I'm not willing to take this girl's story as fact. I'm obviously jaded.

Obviously.  And what you think happened is exactly what corporate media wants you to believe.

Wow. That was pretty condescending. Those who don't agree with you are lemmings, unable to form their own opinions? How do you know what I believe? I haven't made up my mind yet because I don't think we have enough objective, third-party accounts to support one retelling of events over another . This story has been widely reported by all media outlets from all corners, and the woman in question has made use of many opportunities to share the experience from her own perspective. She is neither being muzzled nor is the media refusing to report the events from her own perspective. The woman herself was quoted as saying she was attempting to get records together in order to support her belief that the police caused her miscarriage. What for, if not a lawsuit? Just because someone is incredulous and looking to form her own opinion (rather than the one you espouse) doesn't make that person a dupe for the "corporate" media. Given how skeptical you are of the media's intentions and affiliations, I would think you'd be less Inclined to take what's reported as objective or factual. That is, unless you were there and witnessed it firsthand.

You said yourself in your first post that you didn't think she was even there for the right reasons.  You implied that she lacked personal responsibility, hence why she was homeless and pregnant.  That line of thinking immediately tells me that you have no idea about the homeless society and are making accusations and assumptions based on stereotypes and things you hear/see in the media.  I don't think I was out of line for assuming that what you said is based on what you've heard on major news.

I do work directly with the homeless and know many here in the PNW.  I wish more people could know what I do and change this line of thinking that many Americans have.
