My girls will be five weeks on Friday. I was planning on waiting until they were 6 weeks, but thought it would be interesting to find out what everyone else did.
I had a c-section so they were released at 4 days old. We took them to the pedi and the store the next day. We didn't go out a lot, but we went on Target runs, etc with the boys right away.
Ours were born in August, so for the first 8 weeks, we only took them to restaurants where we could eat outside and to dr's appointments.
The dr told us he preferred if we didn't take them out in public until after their 2-month appt/vaccines b/c he said if they got sick before that, they'd likely need to be hospitalized. That was enough to scare us into not taking them out much, even though I now realize we were probably overly conservative.
I took mine out when they were about 6 weeks old-but a lot of that had to do with the fact that I had help for the first 5 weeks, so there wasn't a reason for me to bring them with me.
As soon as a got released from the hospital we went home for a little bit and then went out to eat with family, also on Sundays for Church and I'm guessing we were out shopping here and there soon after I was released.

I didn't take them anywhere until they were 4 weeks. We still don't go out alot mainly b/c I have help and it's just hard. I think you are fine if you are ready to get out.

At 8 days (day after they were released), we went to pedi for first time. Then about 2 wks later, we went to BILs house for nephew's bday, which was a small affair. 2 wks later, we went back to BILs house for Thanksgiving.

When they were 4 weeks old, my parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, so we took them to church and the reception afterward. They did great, we just didn't let anyone touch them!
My boys were 8 weeks early. They came home from the hospital at 18 days old and we went to the store that day to do some last minute things that we needed. We went 5 hours away when they were 4 weeks old. We were told to not have people hold the boys unless they washed their hands. I asked what the guidelines were and the NICU told us just to not take the boys near anyone who was sick.
They were at Walmart at 4 days old and at a Thanksgiving (Canadian in October) dinner with 20 family members at 5 days old. They have yet to be any kind of sick, other than some stuffy nose, congested cough.

I took them out at just shy of 2 weeks old to go to church, but it wasn't really my first choice - DH had to go back to work suddenly and my mom was helping me and I didn't want her to miss church on my account. After that we took them mostly only to the pedi and not in any place crowded for a long time. They were over 6 weeks old the first time we took them to Target, and that was in January. After that, we started noticing more and more coughs and sniffles out in public so we kept them home as much as possible as it was RSV season.
I know lots of people who don't take the baby out except to doctor's appointments for the first 6 weeks. I don't think it's entirely a bad idea.
I took them to my 6 week appointment and my office after that. We went to the airport around 8 weeks to pick-up my sister and then shopping afterwards. Good luck on your first outing!
Wow I have to give it to you for staying inside that long!!! I had my boys on a Monday morning, discharged Wednesday and Friday of that week we took them to the mall to have pictures taken with my oldest (who was only 2 at the time). We walked around the mall for about an hour. But I'm not one to stay home because of "flu" season. My husband works at a Naval Hospital in the Operating Room so he's around contageous (spello?!) people ALL the time. The main one thing that I kind of flip out about with him is when he has a TB patient...he makes sure to take a shower before leaving the hospital, other then that he just comes home and takes a shower. My twins were born at 37 weeks 1 day, not sure if that helps any?!

Not until at least 6 weeks (not counting Dr. visits.) plus mine were 1month early (36w). Even at 6weeks it was just a couple of times.
I did take them at 3w to mall to get their newborn shots. That was it.
1 week.... we never stayed in the house - no reason... we just didn't let people touch our babies, etc.
