Baby Names

Boy names I love right now...

Percival.  Thoughts?  Insight?

Virgil.  Thoughts?  Insight?

I'm not crazy about the diminutive of Percival (Percy), but I don't hate it.

DH doesn't love them, but he likes Virgil better than Percival.  This is for a theoretical 3rd DS.

  • I know a Virgil who is an awesome guy, so I like that one!  Percival though...not so much.

  • My father and grandfather are Virgil.  My dad hates his name and he and my mom refused to continue the tradition by naming my brother Virgil.  :)  My father goes by Virg though.  I guess I don't really mind the name because I am so used to hearing it all the time.

  • NMS. At all. Virgil sounds like virgin, bet it won't take long for the playground kids to pick that up.

  • I'm not a fan of either names. They are not masculine at all IMO. Sorry.

    Percival/Percy - pu$$y

    Virgil - virgin

  • I like the idea of Percival. It's the name of one of Arthur's Knights of the Round Table, so the mythology makes it kind of fun. I'd think a little boy would love it.

Virgil seems like a an old man, deep south name to me, like Elmer or Merle or something. Definitely not my style.

  • Percival nn Percy has really grown on me.  But that may be because there is too much Thomas the Tank Engine in my life.

Not a big fan of Virgil though.  Virgil might be okay, but the nn Virge makes my skin crawl.

You know, I really find this offensive and I don't appreciate your tone.  This is the second offensive post you have made today.  I decided to hold me tongue (or what ever the internet equivalent is) this morning when you described two names as wussy, but I can't any longer.

Please stop using these types of words because you are coming across as homophobic IMO.

Hmm... the last thing I want to do is get into the middle of a debate, but I was surprised by this because in my mind wussy and gay are totally unrelated. Wussiness does not connote any specific sexuality in my mind.

That being said, I also find Percival (specifically the nn Percy) to be wussy sounding. Which is too bad, because I freakin' love Arthurian legend. I read a book with a character named Parsifal, which is a variation that I like better, but it's pretty out there.

  • I dont like either one at all. Percy is the only name that I think is ok.

Plus, I don't think they go with your current kids names, which sound like strong/tough boy names. And Percival and Virgil make me think of sissy boys. (although I did go to high school with a Virgil and we all thought he took steroids...)

Yuck. I can't imagine yelling either of those names across a playground....

  • So....after reading all of the posts on here, I will take a stab at my answer.

Honestly neither name is one that I would choose. However, I have heard some choice comments on a couple names that my DH and I like...one of which, "That sounds like a dogs name!"

After hearing that I did not get mad or upset to be honest it didnt bother me at all.... being on a board like this and asking people's opinion you will hear good and bad. But in the end does it matter?? You choose a name for your baby that you like and that is all that matters!!

  • I'm not a fan of either one. They both sound kind of pretentious.

  • While I love "old man" names, I am not a fan of either of those names.  Same as I wouldn't name my child after one of my grandfather's, Clyde (which means slow and dumb from what I read once).  I would recommend Otis, Irving, Felix, Rosco.
