3rd Trimester

Membranes Stripped Day Before Dr. Goes on Vacation?

So, tomorrow will be my 40 week appointment (technically 39 weeks, 5 days). My doctor plans on stripping my membranes because I've not made much progress... baby hadn't even fully dropped as of 39 weeks. She doesn't necessarily think it would kick-start labor right away for me because of my lack of progress. I'm nervous though because she will be out of town on Thursday and Friday. Would you get your membranes stripped the day before the doctor is out of town for two days?

  • Since it's a tossup on what doctor will play catch even if my OB was in town I'd probably opt to have it done if the doc was willing...

  • I say do it. Honestly with my first my DR was in town, but she wasn't at the hospital when I was able to give birth so I ended up with another DR anyway.

This was the case with me too. And I loved the OB that delivered so much o switched to him for this pregnancy. I say go for it!

  • Thank you - I was planning to have it done anyways because we are SO ready, but then wondered what other pregnant woman would do in this case... Thanks for the advice!

  • If the idea of going into labor before you would typically go scares you, then I wouldn't do it. Keep in mind though, that stripping membranes might not be possible if you haven't progressed. My doc tried to do that for me with DS2 on two separate occassions, but was not able to strip them because my cervix was still shut tight. Also, just because she strips them doesn't mean you will go into labor.

If its just the thought of your doc not being the one to deliver your baby that scares you, the doc basically just shows up to catch your baby and stitch you up if needed - so having a different OB there really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things - the nurses are the key players in the labor process. I hope that helps. GL!

  • Agree with PP above me (December...) and I would do it.  My doctor had a practice of 5 or so doctors and any one of them could have delivered my baby, but the one on call was doing a c-section when it was time to push so I got a random on call ob and could not have cared less.

My doctor actually went off-call as I walked into the hospital so I knew he wouldn't be the one there.  With this one (we moved so I switched OBs) it's the same - she's in a practice of several doctors (8 I think) and any one of them could be there to catch - and again I could really not care less.  I'm not super impressed with my doctor at this point, but not annoyed enough to switch so I really don't care who catches.  The nurses are the ones you interact with the most so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
