November 2011 Moms

It's working!

LO pooped 6 times the day she was born and then didn't poop again for 6 days plus dropped almost a fell pound from her birth weight.  Not good.  We saw a LC who examined latch and hooked us up with a nipple shield.  LO latches beautifully with it.  We started on a grueling routine.  Every 2 hours - nurse for 15 min each side, pump for 10 minutes, offer bottle.  Well, she just pooped for the 3rd time today (she pooped at least 5 times for the last 4 days!!)!  And she's taking less and less from the bottle, sometimes even refusing, which I hope means she's nursing effectively.  Here's hoping for a good weight check on Wednesday!

  • That is excellent!  Good luck at the weight check!

  • I used a nipple shield with DS.  He wasn't able to latch properly after my milk came in, and I was a basketcase.  I don't think I woudl have been able to successfully BF w/o it!  It was def. a confidence booster (and helped with the pain).  DS weaned off of it around 4ish weeks - so don't worry - you can eventually get off of it when it's time and baby is ready.  Also, it didn't cause any nipple confusion for us at all.
  • Yay!  That's awesome.  I used a nipple shield for one day in the hospital and it really helped us to get the hang of it.

Also, our little one hadn't pooped for a few days and my best friend (who is a family practice doc) recommended putting a little diaper cream around her bottom and massaging it.  It seemed funny, but it definitely worked!

  • That's great news.  Just shows that BFing really takes dedication.  I hope that I can stick to it like you have.  That's awesome that she's pooping regularly!

  • Congrats, what a great feeling.  I went through that nurse/pump/supplement routine, shield and all with DS1.  And for a few days with DS2.  It's hard, but worth it when they start getting it right.  good job!

  • I never thought the day would come when I would understand the excitement around pooping, peeing, farting and burping! Haha. Big Smile

That's great things are looking up...I hope the weight check goes well and things continue to go well!

  • I have a similar routine for breastfeeding, pumping, and then formula feeding but I have the opposite, my LO poops like 5x per day...and most of them are explosive!

  • So glad it is working!  Good luck with the weight check tomorrow.  BTW my son saw this post open on my computer and now keeps asking to see the picture of the baby.  When he sees the picture, he says "baby. cute."
