Re: Settle a debate (NBR)

  • My vote is "Are you shitting me?  Who the F shuts the water off?!?"  Beyond freezing your cheeks off, you then have to find the right hot/cold balance all over again and risk blasting yourself with ice water or suffering 3rd degree burns.

  • I'm in Missouri. I have never even heard of someone turning off the water during that time. We have an electric water heater now but when we hda a gas water heater it would have taken forever for the water to heat up enough when you would need to turn it back on to rinse off.

this is where I'm at.  Apparently you can save a ton of money if you do this over the course of a couple years.  I just think I'd rather pay the money and not freeze my butt off.

  • There are other uses for the water when you're conditioning, you can wash your body, shave, etc... I don't think it needs to be shut off if you can use it effectively. And this poll is asinine.

Is it any more stupid than a million other random poll posts?  I happened to have this debate at work this morning.  Most people said they shut the water off, I didn't believe that many people could possibly stand freezing their cheeks off, so I posted about it here.  I did mention that it was non bump/baby related.  You opened it knowing that.  So don't complain.

I guess they did a whole segment on NPR about it and people were chatting it up in the teacher's room.  I was very surprised by how many people claimed to shut the water off.

Ok then I don't have to side eye him when I see him :-p  Seriously though, I'd rather go to bed early or read by candlelight to save on electricity than shut my water off mid shower.  I think I'd waste more water screwing around trying to get the temp right.  And it's not like any of us are Rapunzel and it takes more than 30 seconds to shampoo our hair.

  • LOL, I'm a never. When I was a kid, my mother was always all about turning off the water. Then I realized that results in freezing while it's off and freezing when you first turn the water back on until it warms up again. Forget mother earth on this one. I'd rather just take a slightly shorter shower.

  • I'm sure there are people out there who do it, but even I live in FLA (the Southernmost point down in the Keys!) and because it's hot outside, it's really cold inside cause the A/C is blasting, so I'm not sure the location has much to do with it (if anything, where it's cold outside it may be a little warmer inside), but I've never felt the need to turn it off! If i were outside in a shower it probably wouldn't be such a big deal, but even then as a PP said, i still wash myself while my hair is lathered! :)

dude this is what I'm saying.  How long is the shampoo actually in there?  I guess some people even shut it off while shaving.  Can you say "Hell No!"  Thats the last thing I want to do while shaving!

  • At our old apartment we had a showerhead with a switch on it.  Switching it off would keep the water temperature the same but hold the stream.  When we had that, if it was warm out, I switched it off.  We don't have that now so I don't.

  • I click sometimes.

If DH showers before me and there is not a lot of hot water left i will shut it off while shaving or shampooing so I don't run out of hot water. I would rather it be off while shaving than on and freezing cold while rinsing my hair.

that is the only time I do that though

Andplusalso, I'd get soap in my eyes, the shower handles would get all soapy and gross and I run the risk of scalding myself by turning the hot up too much unawares.

  • We do this in the camper. The fresh water tank isn't very big, and it takes a long time for me to rinse the conditioner out of my hair. If I didn't turn the water off, we'd run out of water before the weekend was over. It does suck though. I get so cold while I'm washing!

Oh, and thinking about it, some campgrounds have shower houses like that. Like the sinks that you have to keep pushing the hot and cold "buttons" down. That way it doesn't waste so much water. You have to keep pushing in the button every 30 seconds or so. It's horrible!

  • I take super quick showers and I normally multi task, so while my conditioner is soaking in, I will be washing my face or body.  I am normally in for 5-6 minutes.  Also if DH and I shower together we take turns in the water so it's never just running unused.

  • At home/hotel/etc? HELL NO!

But at my friends and grandparents houses in VT (same area), we do because they're on limited water wells. ARMY SHOWER!

Oh, and at our cabin where we only have a 6 gallon hot water heater. It gets ice cold before I can rince the conditioner out if I dont shut it off between!

  • True story:

When I lived in Saint Petersburg (Russia), the city "fixes the pipes" every year.  So there is no hot water.  Every flucking summer.  You could heat it and dump it in the tub, but I'm not a bath person-- blech.

So you bet I turned the water off when I was living there.
