Anyone get pregnant while on Mirena?

So I'm probably freaking myself out, and I probably shouldn't of went on the Mirena website to look at the side effects, but I'm worried about being pregnant.  On the website it says less than 5% of people will experience these symptoms I've been having...My complexion is breaking out something horrible (worst than I've seen in a loooong time) and my nipples are very sensitive and sore lately.  Honestly, I don't remember when my last period really was exactly because it's so sporadic on this.  Either my luck of the draw sucks and I am in the unfortunate 5% or.....

Does anyone else have these symptoms on Mirena?

  • If you're worried about being pregnant go POS. It will still be accurate even with Mirena in. It says that if you don't have a period for 6 weeks to take a test & call your doctor if you are really worried. A lot of the side effects (even the more common ones) make you think that you are pregnant such as the tenderness of breasts, nausea, sensitive sense of smell and some other stuff. The nurse I talked to after I had mine inserted told me that when she first had it put in she thought she was pregnant because she was having these symptoms- and she wasn't pregnant. HTH calm your nerves.

    Now go POS.

  • I have been having some pregnancy symptoms for a few weeks now- extreme exhaustion, sore/tender breasts and nipples, etc.  I have not had a period since the first month I had the Mirena.  I keep taking HPT's and all of them are negative.  The thing that helps me feel better is that since I don't get periods, I take an HPT (cheapie internet ones) on the first of every month and feel for the strings on that day as well.  Are your strings still in place?  If you're still super worried, I would call your doctor.  HTH!
  • I had extremely irregular periods and once went about 3 months without one. I also had the worst acne I've ever had. And the worst cramps too. After trying prescription acne meds for a few months with no results, I had it taken out and got on bcp. My acne cleared up within a month. It sucks though because now I have long monthly periods. Better than the acne!
  • I agree with PP, if you think you are pg, POS.  I have not had a period in almost a year (since I had Mirena placed).  So, I POS about every 6 weeks or so.   I have random symptoms all the time.  Some times my face breaks out horribly, I had some random spotting a couple weeks ago and my breasts were sore.  I have heard of people getting pg on Mirena, so it is possible, but not likely.  Do you check your strings?

  • A co-worker/friend of mine got pg while on Mirena.  It ended up being an ectopic pregnancy.  She lost the baby and her tube.  Her experience is why I will never have an IUD.

  • I do try to check my strings, but I'm not really sure if I'm feeling them or not... dumb question I know, but are they pokey?

  • yes...they are kind of wiry, like pipecleaners without the fuzzy stuff on the outside.
