2nd Trimester

Vegetable and protein aversions

I am almost 13 weeks and am starting to get over the nausea (well it's becoming more sporatic). I've gained about 3lbs my first trimester and work out 6 days a week pretty vigorously while watching my heart rate, drinking lots of water and taking breaks. I am a little worried because my food intake has totally changed. I cannot stand vegetables. I use to live off of salads topped with lots of protein filled ingredients and now I have no desire for meats or vegetables. If I had my way, I'd eat a bowl of cereal for every meal. I've been trying to eat protein in greek yogurt, cheese and the one meat I do crave: tuna (which I eat in moderation). I notice that my cereals contain a lot of the required vitamins and nutrients that I'm suppose to be getting. I'm wondering if my obsession with special K is depriving my baby of anything.

Re: Vegetable and protein aversions

  • Although a varied diet is ideal, it's not always possible when dealing with pregnancy.  Protein has been my biggest challenge because I don't eat meat.  I bought boxes and boxes of Kashi Go Lean cereal for those times when I can't stand the thought of anything else -- 1 cup of it has 13g of protein (17g after you add half a cup of milk) and 10g of fiber, plus all of the vitamins and stuff they add to it.

  • I had the same issue with my last two pregnancies- it got to the point where only unhealthy choices sounded good to me, so I got a prescription for nausea and the meds allowed me to enjoy eating healthy foods instead.
  • I know exactly how you feel about the veggies...I can't STAND them!!  Never could, in fact.  I only ever ate salads because I can't stomach the smell of cooked vegetables.  I never could, my whole life.

I feel bad too, because I know I'm depriving my baby of much-needed veggies, and I don't want my baby to be a picky eater like I was when I grew up!

  • Kashi is a great idea for protein! I have some and I will start buying some more :). My nausea isn't too bad. My aversions are very strong though. Maybe as the nausea completely leaves, I'll be interested in eating other foods. I do like candy! Hehe.

  • I am in the same boat. I used to eat so much kale and salads.. but havent touched kale since i got bfp. protein is another issue... i can barely eat a small amount of chicken or my usual turkey burgers. I try to eat lentil soup, greek yogurt, eggs, other beans, boca burgers on whole wheat english muffins have been my go to for lunch lately. so strange how it happens!

  • I have had the same aversions and have also been eating lots of cereal! I've been making an effort to eat cottage cheese with fruit, greek yogurt, and some peanut butter on toast every day, along with milk, so that I still get protein. Also eating lots of fruit since I'm not eating any veggies.

  • I have the same aversions, and I'm a vegan, lol! I force-feed myself kale for the calcium and iron, and for protein I've been eating black bean soup. I've found I can also eat seitan but only when it's ground up and cooked into something (I used to be able to eat big seitan steaks but at this point I think my brain thinks it's meat and doesn't want anything to do with it) So perhaps try things like bolognese or shepherd's pie. I find it's easier when it's with a bunch of carbs like bread or pasta.
