Which first? Ditch the binky or move to big bed?

Ds2 will be 3 next month. He's still in a crib and has no interest in climbing out. And he still has a pacifier for nap and nighttime. We're ready to get rid of the binky and we are also looking to redo the boys' room with two twins that can eventually be bunked. So which battle should we start first?

  • K is the same age. We're ditching the binky first.

DS was in his crib until 3.5 and she's still perfectly happy in hers. I am keeping her contained as long as possible.

  • We ditched the binky first.

  • Our neighbors used the move to the big bed as the binky solution for their twins.

They have an older sister so they were really excited to move to a big bed to be like her. . . and they weren't allowed to sleep in their big beds with binkies.  I think they were about 2.5.

  • DD was the same way.  We ditched the binky first and the bed 3 months later.  No problems.

  • We did it the opposite way as everyone here and I can say without a doubt, it was the wrong way.  We did crib then binky and once we cut the binky she won't go to bed without A LOT of help.

  • I'd do each on their own timeline, based on when you think he's ready.  We switched DS2 to a bed at 23 months with no issues, then waited until a few months past 3 to ditch the paci.  It worked for us.  I was worried about the paci for a while, but the dentist kept telling us it was no big deal, that we could wait until he was ready.  He had two of them left, but one was his favorite.  One day it was just so disgusting I couldn't give it to him any longer, so I told him he could either use the other one or go without.  He chose to be done with it.

I will say that DS2 was my only kid who had an easy transition to a bed, and I think it was BECAUSE he was still happy in the crib.  He was a good sleeper no matter where we put him.  My oldest and youngest both started climbing out and putting up a huge fuss about the crib at around 18 months, so we moved them out of necessity.  Both had a rocky transition.

  • I'd do them both together and get it over with. Why have two separate potential struggles? I'd play up the big boy bed and add that big boys in awesome new beds don't have pacis.

This is what I'm thinking. DS1 is 3y4m, and he still sleeps in his crib with his paci. He loves them both, and doesn't want a bed or to be without his paci @ bedtime. He's also in the process of giving up naps, so I'm thinking maybe do it all at once?
