How long did you swaddle for?

Evan breaks out of all swaddles.  We've tried a regular blanket, two blankets (double swaddling him), SwaddleMe, Miracle Blanket, Sleep Sack with Swaddle....every single one he can bust out of.  It seems like he needs to be swaddled and sleeps better that way but when he decides he wants to get out of the swaddle, that's all he'll do and wake himself up.

Should I admit defeat and just leave him unswaddled?  I'm afraid that will mean even less sleep for us.  :-(  How long did you swaddle for?

  • Aaron hated to be swaddled (he would break out of it at every opportunity) so we gave up and went with sleep sacks.  What about the woombie or something similar to that?  Otherwise I might try one night w/o him swaddled and see how it goes.

  • How is he breaking out of the Miracle Blanket?  DS could wiggle his way out by kicking the bottom of the swaddle until he'd pulled it below his shoulders and then he could worm his arms out.  But the arms would startle him awake so I stopped swaddling his legs.  I would just use the upper part of the miracle blanket and leave the leg pouch under him.

We swaddled DS this way until 7 or 8 months when he starting rolling over in his crib.  Then we quit cold turkey.

  • This is embarrassing, but both kids were swaddled for way too long. :)  Crash was for 9 months and B even longer.  They both slept better with it.  Crash broke free often early on, but I still felt that he slept better if he was swaddled initially.  If it is interrupting sleep, then I would probably switch to a sleep sack.
  • Ours hated it from day one in the hospital (and he was a January baby).  Luckily as of 4 months old he started sleeping throughout the night.  Have you tried a night of no swaddling at all to see how much he sleeps?  Good luck.

  • We swaddled for about a week before giving up. She hated having her arms restricted and sleep sacks have worked much better for us. I wish I would have registered for sleep sacks instead of the Swaddle Me things.

This is what he's doing.  I'll try leaving his legs out and see if that works otherwise we'll go with just a sleep sack and see what happens.  I just hate the thought of even worse sleep than we're getting now!  I've been too scared to try it.

  • We still swaddle Elin and she sleeps great so I don't intend to stop any time soon.  I use the summer infant swaddle pod.

She can't break out of it but she is almost too big for it.  I think there is a brand called "woombie" that makes bigger ones but they are more expensive.

Ditto this!! As long as his legs are out and it's wrapped tight enough, I don't see how he could get out of it. That's what we did with Mads until about 7 months.

  • With DS # 1 I swaddled until about 4-6 months (can't recall exactly) and with DS # 2, we have not swaddled too much, he does not like it at all.
  • About 4-5mos...  We stopped when he spent more time trying to break out it than sleeping.  The transitions to sleep sacks was pretty easy.

Ditto this but the boys were about 3.5 months. I wish they were swaddled longer.

  • My DD was wriggling her thumb to her mouth and sucking it even through the blanket, so I started leaving one arm out at about 3 months, that worked well for a while, but then I went to the sleep sack a couple of months later. I think the main use of a swaddle is when they still have the strong Moro or startle reflex. If you don't swaddle a newborn, then every time they start to fall asleep, if they startle a little they wake themselves up. It goes away by 4 months so unless the baby really likes it, it shouldn't be as big of a deal after about 3-4 months.

This was us.  Lilly slept swaddled for 9 months.  We tried breaking her off it earlier...a few separate times and she just wasn't having it.  She loved being swaddled.  And she never really ever tried to break out of it.

If he keeps breaking out and it's making him wake up a lot more then I'd probably just try the sleep sack.

  • E sleeps terribly, usually sleeps 4 hours and then up every 2 after that. Swaddling was the only thing we could do to get 4 hours in a row. I just ordered the "Merlin Magic Sleep Suit"  2 weeks ago and she has slept 6 hours straight! Check it out on google, it totally helped us so far and keeps her warm. You for sure have to make sure they have socks on tho cus E gets cold hands and feet.
