For teachers, that is.

Re: s/o I'll be the nosey one and ask how much you spend on your giftcards

  • I'm only giving to C's daycare and R's kindergarten teacher.  We'll give daycare a $50 gift card plus another homemade gift and then R's teacher will get a $25 gift card.
  • Loading the player...
  • We haven't up to this point.  Our preschool STRONGLY discourages gifts to the teachers, and the teacher offer up 'wish lists' for the classroom.  I spent about $25 last year on B's room.   I'll do the same for N's room this year....which may mean buying a Target or Michaels GC, depending on what is needed.

I'm thinking of doing the notepad thing this year for B's kindy teacher (I think it was maybe Joy that did that???  Had her son write out the teacher's name and printed on a "from the desk of...." type pad).  Other than that, I won't do much, if at all.  I appreciate her, for sure, but my volunteering time (which I often have to pay a babysitter for) is much more valuable than a Starbucks card.  (I don't mean that to sound snotty or whatever - she says the most helpful things we can do is volunteer, not buy 'stuff' for her/the room)

  • Home daycare - I spent about $50 on her last year, will do the same.

2 assistants - spent around $25, will do the same this year.

Kinder teacher - probably around $25. I might do an REI GC or something from her alma mater; they wear their college shirts each week. She taught the kids the school song, and she has the flag in her classroom. Given that she looks to be outdoorsy and loves her alma mater, I think I have an easy year. I was thinking even a sweatshirt from her school, which is HUGE here, so it's very easy to find collegiate items. Didn't know if that'd be too personal? She isn't a coffee drinker.

    Christmas 2011
  • Now I feel scrooge-ish.  I spend 10-20 per teacher.
    .
  • $20 per teacher, likely to Target, and a nice card with a handwritten note. When I taught, those notes are what I loved the most. GCs were always a hit for me too.
  • $15 for the 2 preschool teachers, $20 for kindy teacher
  • The daycare teachers will get $50 cash each.

I will probably make a donation of supplies to the kindergarten classroom instead of a gift to the teacher.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I really hope the teachers don't judge parents by the amount we spend on their Christmas gifts. I've donated books and supplies to the classroom this year. DH had 3 days cancelled (they were Saturdays, so just extra days, but we had figured out our budget and that's where Christmas money was coming from). We've had to rearrange our budget a bit and there is not room for all the extras right now. His teachers will probably get $10/piece in gift cards. I hope that's not held against me.

  • I'm a scrooge I guess- in the past the teachers always got a homemade gift (jam, vanilla, etc.)

This year *I'm* the teacher, LOL, but I don't suppose I'll get anything. ;-)

I am sure it is not.  I have been very vocal against gift giving to teachers at holidays.  I gift the preschool teachers privately because they make a scandalous wage for the service they provide.  Kindy teachers make a healthy wage with good benefits, holidays and security up here.

  • I'd hope my kids teachers would never judge anyone on gifts. I really, really want to make beaded ornaments this year, but probably won't happen. That's my first choice, but time will win out.

  • $25

  • $25 visa giftcard
  • Last year we did $100 for teacher, $50 for assistant and $50 for lunch lady who takes care of my food allergy kid. This year we have two assistants but I'm guessing we'll do the same amounts. Our school is a full time prek3 run in a private daycare.

Prior to daycare, we had a nanny who we gave the week off paid and gave an extra paycheck for a holiday gift so these teacher amounts were a huge reduction in our spend. The nanny took him to a MMO program two days, three hours per week, and we did $25 for each of the two teachers there.

Eta: I got the director personalized notecards and the owner a travel coffee mug and bag of coffee.

No good teacher would hold it against you.  I am a teacher in Canada and what ridesbutton says is true- we do make a good wage.  Preschool teacher however have a terrible wage!

I organize group gifts for both DD preschool & DS classroom teacher.  I am getting $10 per student from the grade one class and buying her a gc to a local book store.  For the preschool I take in $40 per kid, but there are 7 teachers to buy for.  I am not sure yet where we will get them gc from. Doing group gifts is so great. Ends up costing less but the teachers get a nice gift and feel appreciated.
