Gas waking my 5 wk old in the night! HELP

My little one is 5 wks old..and we feed him 3.5 oz every 3 hrs during the day and and do a cluster feed at 6 and 8 and also a feed in his sleep at 10 pm(dreamfeed). Hes been gassy ever since I switched to formula at 11 days old but hes been on Gerber Goodstart Gentle since then and he seems to be doing well on it-no reflux..spitting up..but his gas is unreal! Im giving him gas drops and Colic Calm(gripe water)and still the gas at night is enough to wake him up grunting and pulling his legs back. He dosent cry for food or even cry just simply wakes up. I honestly believe he would STTN hadnt been for this gas issue. What else can i do if Im already giving him drops and Colic Calm..is this this something he'll just outgrow? HELP

  • His digestive system is still really immature. Mine did the same thing and we just let him do his own thing. They grunt and pull their legs back and use their whole body b/c they don't have enough coordination to only use a few necessary muscles. If he's not in pain, I'd just leave him be.

  • DD does this too and has since about 3 weeks.  We are at 5.5 weeks and it still happens.  I am wondering when it will end.  DD is EBF, so I doubt it has a lot to do with the formula.

  • DS has this problem also. We use Little Tummy's Gripe Water and it seems to help. He sleeps 4.5 - 5 hour stretches now and rarely wakes himself up with the straining due to gas!

I know your pain.  My DD is just under 6 weeks and does not sleep more than 2.5 hours at a time, she wakes up SCREAMING and you can tell she has terrible gas.  We do the gas drops and have switched formulas no difference.  I am planning on trying gripe water tonight...hoping it makes a difference... Let me know if you figure something out!!!
