Coconut Oil for Stretch Marks

I had a funny/helpful experience at Trader Joe's yesterday that I thought I would share. I was looking at the Luna bars to try to find something healthy to eat when nausea strikes (it seems to happen when i'm hungry and no where near food) I started to eavesdrop on the converstaion that a pregnant woman was having with an employee about coconut oil. She said that she used it on her belly from the first month of her last pregnancy and that she had no stretch marks. A few other women overheard and one chimed in that her daughter had the same experience. I immediatley threw some in my cart as did another woman who bought some for her daughter-in-law. We'll see. I don't think it can hurt!

  • Unfortunately, while we like to rely on personal testimony over data,  the scientific data doesn't support coconut oil or anything else preventing stretch marks. It's mostly genetic.

  • I'm curious as to why they only used it for the first month? Why wouldn't you keep using it?

I used Palmer's with my last PG and didn't get any stretch marks. As PP said it seems to be genetically linked. However I have several stretch marks from puberty and absolutely none from my PG. So that's my experience, feel free to take it with a grain of salt.

I've heard it may even just be the act of rubbing something on your skin that is helpful, because it increases blood flow and whatnot. Overall, I personally believe that using something is better than using nothing, but there's no miracle cure that always works, or else we'd all know about it by now.

    We love our little guys!

  • I know it's not scientifically proven or anything, but at least the coconut oil smells good! The woman who was talking about it used it for the whole pregnancy, she started in the first month before any sort of baby bump and contnued throughout.

  • I didn't do anything and didn't get any stretch marks. Thanks mom for the great genes!

But you are right coconut oil does smell amazing!

  • it does smell good. like the beach.
  • I actually believe that coconut oil helps a lot, there are several reports on all the beneficial factors coconut oil has including helping scars heal and lose visibility of them fast, I used a refined one on accident on my knee and it really did help my scars go away.
I'm planning on using it throughout my pregnancy for 22 dollars for natural stuff that will last probably longer than the pregnancy term I will totally do it.
    Plus it does smell wonderful
  • violincyn, your ticker says you are 97 weeks pregnant.  That must be uncomfortable  8-X

  • Its really good at helping them fade, Ive had stretch marks on my thighs from growing and it works way better than cocoa butter. The only thing that stinks is the kind you need has to have a scent the scentless doesn't do anything because they took all the natural ingredients out and added some crap in it.but it lasts a while i only use it once a week it helps keep your skin smooth and I'm 5 months 2 days now, i haven't gotten any yet.
  • I was wondering why this story seemed familiar!
