So this past weekend Keira had a really high fever. Usually it ranged from 102 - 103 but early Saturday monring it reached 105.1 which landed her in the ER. They said she had a UTI and gave her antibiotics (more on that later). Her doctors office called and they want to schedule a follow up urine (which I expected) but they also want to schedule an Ultrasound. They said most of the time that it's just a fluke and that the kid just doesn't wipe well but that sometimes it is due to kids not being "anatomically correct or have an obstruction". So I'm hoping it's just a fluke but of course part of me is worrying. Just wondering if anyone else had experience with this.
They did a culture on the urine and aparrantly this bacteria was resistant to 2 different types of antibiotics (one of which she was on) so they had to get her on another one yesterday. Luckily she is feeling better but this would explain why she wasn't really recovering.
I can't really deal with much more "good" news in 2011. Bring on 2012!!!!!
Re: Anyone's DD have a UTI (under 5)?
I do have experience with this but don't have time to write out a proper response now. Check back later and I'll write more!!!
Yes, they are suspecting urinary reflux. We went through this with my daughter when she was 9 months old.
They will probably recommend getting a VCUG. Here is some information on it:
https://pediatrics.about.com/od/pediatricsglossary/g/0906_vcug.htm
Honestly, it was a pretty invasive test. I would request to wait until at least the second UTI before getting the test done.
ETA: I just reread the last part. So she still has the UTI? Then I would go ahead with the VCUG, assuming that is what they are going to recommend.
Good luck, I hope she feels better soon!
my dd had a UTI that wouldn't go away. She had the VCUG which I agree is a pretty invasive test. dd did have kidney reflux as well as an anatomical issue making the UTIs more likely to continue, and the reflux unlikely to go away on it's own. She ended up having surgery to correct the issue, but from what I understand, that is NOT usually the norm.
Kidney reflux is most often treated with a daily, very small dose of antibiotics. If the child was still getting break thru UTIs even on the antibiotics, then drs would consider surgery at that point. Most kids outgrow it as they get older though.
I hope the antibiotics are working and that it was just a fluke! GL!
both my girls have had a few UTI's..my oldest had the most, and they did the VCUG. It was pretty traumatic for her just because she was recently potty trained and they wanted her to pee on the x-ray table to see where everything was flowing and in her 2 year old voice she was crying "We don't pee in the living room!!!! I can't go!!!!"
and my middle DD had a few so they just did the ultrasound...not too bad.
Both girls were negative for reflux. My oldest had terrible constipation which caused her issues. I had no idea because she poo'd every day....but she was badly backed up.
honestly if she's only had one, I would hold off on a VCUG. Ultrasound, no biggie...but VCUG is pretty invasive....
Thanks for all of the info ladies! So far they are just planning on an ultrasound from what they have told me. From what you are saying of the VCUG I think I would hold off on that for now.
They diagnosed the UTI Saturday morning, the only reason why it took longer to go away is because the bacteria was resistant to the 1st antibiotic. She has been on the new one since yesterday and is MUCH better.
Thanks again, I feel a little better now.
