Metformin?

How many ladies are on Metformin? I'm on 1700 mg a day (2 850 mg pills) and my RE says it's fine to take through the first trimester, but I'm kind of scared of stopping it. I've been on it since March and it gives me no stomach problems now (although it sure did back then). How long are you planning on staying on Metformin?

Re: Metformin?

  • I have PCOS too and I definitely plan on staying on Met it until at least the beginning of the 2nd trimester to prevent miscarriage, but I've been doing some reading over at the SoulCysters blog and some research shows that it's good to stay on it throughout to prevent gestational diabetes.  Here's the link to the post that talks about this research and has links to helpful articles:

Met crosses the plancenta so there's that risk, but so far there doesn't seem to be negative side effects to the baby.  It's a tough decision and I'm completely torn.  What do you think you'll do?  Keep me updated with your decision!

  • I plan on staying on it as long as my RE/OB tells me too. I think a lot of lades stay on it until the end of first tri. I just asked over on PAIF this morning and got a few responses if you want to check them out.

I asked my RE today about this and he consulted some specialists (because he is awesome). He just called me back. They recommended staying on it till 12-13 weeks, then testing me for IR and seeing if everything's okay. Sounds good to me!

  • I was on Metformin with my first son after 5 years of TTC  and PCOS. I stayed on Met the entire pregnancy and my son will turn 8 in December. He is healthy with no side effects from Metformin. Now with my second son, who was a surprise and born 10 months after my first son I was not on Met and I developed GD and it was awful. Now with #3 I was on Metformin before we had IUI #1 in October just because of PCOS.

Don't be scared, things will be fine. If you are worried about developing GD talk with your doctor about staying on it the remainder of the pregnancy.

    Good luck!

  • I have been still taking it and pairing that with taking insulin as well.  We haven't stopped the metformin because of increased miscarriage risk, which she neglected to tell me when I first got pregnant so I had stopped it for the weekend because I read somewhere it could affect the baby.  I don't know when we will stop but think I would be ok with taking it all throughout the pregnancy.
