Baby Stuff Question

One more for you guys tonight...

I have a TON of baby stuff.  Gear, clothes, carriers, diaper bags, more clothes, even more clothes, etc.  Some of it has never been used/worn.

Let's face it, I am not going to need any of it, even if I'm hanging on to it for ridiculous, sentimental reasons.

What should I do with it all?  Keeping in mind this: I really, really need money right now (STBXH can't seem to pay child support but can buy a new truck, naturally...), but I also have ZERO time right now.  Should I just donate and take the tax deduction?  Give it to one of those eBay resellers?  Anyone need it all? Thoughts?

Re: Baby Stuff Question

  • That's hard. I would suggest just taking it all to a consignment shop or second hand kids store. You get less than you would if you sold it yourself but with none of the hassle. I don't know of any in Napa, but Kid to Kid in Santa Clara does quite a bit of business. On a side note, I'm always looking for boy clothes. If you have any 3T on up that you want to sell by the boxful (no need to price out each item), I may be your gal...

  • Although I am one who has kept everything also, I would say go through the clothes when you have a minute to maybe keep a few outfits and sentimental blankets or whatever.  I am a sucker for sentimental stuff, so you may regret just getting rid of it all.  As far as gear, you will get more money I think on craigslist or the like vs consignment, but not positive.
  • I think the clothes may be the hardest to make money off of. You can try listing it on the Swap blog here: www.norcalswap.blogspot.com (email me if you don't have an invite to post: dragonflybride at gmail com) & then try the other avenues people mentioned. I know I'd be curious about your diaper bags & carriers.
  • I would put all the gear and toys on CL.  We decided this year that we were limiting our bday and Christmas budget ( we go Nov.-Christmas-Feb.) only to money that we raised by selling off the boys toys ect. that weren't being played with/used much anymore.  I started in Sept. and have made $525 Party!!!.  That doesn't even include some of the random household stuff we've gotten rid of, made close to an additional $300.

For cloths, anything gymboree and gap is probably worth your time to ebay, especially if you have 5-10 items per size per season to sell in a lot.  Shoes in good condition I'd also ebay.  I've bought a few shoes on ebay and love being able to get things that are slightly used so I don't mind if they are a bit hard on them.  Nothing drives me nuttier than spending $30 + on shoes to have them jump in muddle puddles with them.

Old Navy, Carters ect. I'd take them to a local consignment shop if you have one.  If not I'd try a bit lot on CL and post them on ebay if you're doing the some other stuff.  imo, the lower you go on the 'brand" the bigger the lot to be most successful.

I know ebay can seem a bit overwhelming and a pain but you can order boxes from the post office to be dropped off for you and then print labels at home. It can be easy if you get a system, plus once you get started then you'll be in a groove for future growth spurts.

I ended up giving a lot of things to a fellow nestie mama who was a bit stressed about finances and I think it made a difference for them.  I think if you gave a general list of what you had to give away or sell that you'd get some takers on here.  I'd be interested in shoes in sizes 10.5, 11 for winter or 12-13 for summer, along with 13 or kid 1 for winter.  I don't remember how old your #2 is but if you need anything for winter I might be able to help you out with stuff I need to get rid off.

My final thing to get rid of stuff would be a family shelter or something along those lines.  Hopefully that would be as easy as goodwill ect but more meaningfull.

  • Sell the gear, donate the clothing.

Ditto this, unless you can sell them as a lot like all the 12 mo. stuff you could make some money that way.

  • Ditto on selling the gear and donate the clothes...I'm gonna message you. I may be able to help you unload some stuff ;)
