Size Question re: Boys' Clothes

Ok, I know I'm probably a moron here but... Will has grown out of his 5T clothes (they look like he's expecting a flood), but I put a pair of size 6 pants on him this morning and he was swimming in them.  Am I missing something?  Is there a transitional size or is size 5 in Boys not the same as 5T?

Re: Size Question re: Boys' Clothes

  • According to Gymboree, there is a difference. The non-"t" sizes are longer and a little leaner (we asked because we found PJs that we wanted but they were a 3, not a 3T). I don't know if that's the same with all the brands, but my guess is yes...

  • The basic answer i've found is any T is cut to make room for a diaper, so a bit shorter and wider. Don't know what brand you prefer but when I was trying to decide on fall cloths I liked that gymboree has regular/husky/skinny options. Like you we went from 4t - 5t and even that jump was insane.  The kid can't squash into a 4 but the 5T is baggy all over, not just the waist (which of course doesn't have adjustable anymore) but the hips and legs are super baggy.  Add in my kiddos super short legs and his pants look pretty crazy.  I finally got out the fabric tape measure and actually took his measurements.
  • G would wear either a 5t in toddler, or an XS in "big boy" sizes - at Target. I haven't looked at pants anywhere else though.

  • P went from a 5T to a boys 4 or XS.

This, D took the same path. Once you drop the T it goes to a 4/XS  and then up from there.
  • Ditto the others...the boys went from 5T to XS in big boy stuff everywhere else (Target, Old Navy, etc). But the waists are still big on the boys...and if it isn't that is the looooooooooooooong legs. We just can't win. ;)
