Is it okay to eat Baked Brie?

I know Brie and other "soft cheeses" are on the no no list, but is it okay to eat brie if you bake it first? Getting my thanksgiving menu together and I could totally go for some! TIA

Re: Is it okay to eat Baked Brie?

  • You can eat soft cheese as long as it has been pasteurized.  If you live in the USA then you are most likely buying pasteurized cheese from main stream grocery stores.

    Eat it!

  • They are only on the no list if they aren't pasteurized.  Pasteurized soft cheeses are fine.

  • I thought as long as it's pasteurized you are OK. And most cheese sold in US is (unless you are a super health/ raw food sort of place). I've been eating brie so I would definitely enjoy some baked brie!

  • The Brie at my local store is pasterized so it's no prob. My Dr said if you're in doubt as to whether something's pasterized (like the mozz cheese on a pizza), it's ok to eat if it's steaming hot. But your Brie is prob pasterized anyway so nothing to worry about.

  • Anecdata -- I've had baked brie several times this pregnancy and LO and I are fine; no listeria!

Pasteurized cheeses, which the VAST majority of cheese sold in the US is, are A-OK to eat, and that includes brie, feta, etc.

If you're really concerned, you could avoid eating the white rind on your baked brie, but the cheese itself is completely fine.

  • I've eaten soft cheeses, but all the soft cheeses we've bought here have been pasteurized. Said on the ingredients list.. i think it's a requirement for any soft cheeses made in Canada. Imported ones I double check because I'm not sure if they are, but those are usually at speciality stores anyway.
