Going home outfits

If (hopefully) my babies are born between 36 and 38 weeks, what size clothes should I bring for them at the hospital? I love the stuff from Baby Gap, but I'm not sure if it will be too big for them or not. Any suggestions?

Re: Going home outfits

  • My girls were born at 38 weeks and weighed 7 and 6.10lbs and NB fit them pretty well.

  • my boys were born at 38w1d... one was 6lb 6oz, and one was 7lb 15.6oz (just shy of 8lbs) and I had some preemie outfits purchased "just in case" they were early.... so I used those that first week - and they fit perfectly. NB stuff is still usually pretty big even on a full term baby - not that it's a problem... but since I had a few preemie outfits I figured I'd use them.

  • Mine were born at 38w 2d at 6lbs 5oz and 6lbs 12oz and they both fit into NB size, it was almost a tad too big.

  • I had small 36 weekers (4.15 and 5.02).  They were too long for preemie, so we went with nb.  They were big, but since they were snuggled up in blankets, etc it worked fine.

  • My DDs were born at 35w6d and were 5lbs14oz and 4lbs12oz.  They were probably about the same size when they went home (less than a week in the NICU).  I had taken both a preemie and newborn sleeper for each.  The preemies fit well but thankfully I had a backup.  My larger DD massively spit up after I got her dressed so I had to scrap her preemie sleeper and use the newborn.  She was swimming in it, but at least she wasn't soaked in puke. :-)  Moral of the story, always have a back up outfit!

  • My kids came home at 4 and 6 lbs, but we still had them in NB clothes. We didn't buy many preemie sizes because they grew out of them for length pretty fast.

  • My girls were born at 35w and spent 2 weeks in the NICU before coming home. They were roughly 5 and 6lbs respectively when they came home, and wore preemie outfits for the first couple of weeks. I got most of them either at a MoM garage sale or the consignment store. They grow out of them so fast, no real reason to pay full price.

Confession: the day my girls were discharged, it was a raging blizzard outside. So we ditched their 'going home' outfits in favor of fleece sleepers, a blanket, and carseat cover. Not fashionable, but they were warm.

  • Mine boys were 5.1lbs and 5.15lbs when they came home.  Most Carters and Gerber NB sizes fit well enough, just a little big on them.  There seems to be a huge jump between preemie and NB.  They were sort of in between still.
  • My boys were born at 37 weeks 1 day. Xavier was 6.4 and Logan was 7 pounds even. They came home in NB clothes but we did run to Wal Mart to get a couple onesies for Xavier in premie size. The NB was just a tad too big. They were born March 30 (in san diego--hot) so thankfully they pretty much just wore a onesie. I would have a couple outfits in NB but maybe one set of cheap premie ones just in case. :)

  • Another vote for newborn size. My girls were born at 33 weeks and came home at 37 and 38 weeks. Newborn size was just right.
  • Our twins were born at 37w2d and they wore the Gymboree 'up to 7 lbs' size. They were actually a little bit big on Owen. Christian was born at 39w1d and was a little bigger than Owen and the NB outfit that we had was a little big on him.

  • I think Gerber and Carter newborn sizes are the smallest and thus fit actual newborns best.  Gap and gymboree seem to run larger.  My girls were both 6lb 12 and the newborn stuff was a bit big.

  • I had the girls at 37weeks and they work preemie for the first 2ish weeks. I took a preemie outfit and nb outfit for each just in case.
