Circumcision

Does anyone have any articles about the pros or cons of circumcision that they think are good? What did you do?  I'm a no but my husband is a yes. Thanks!

Re: Circumcision

  • We chose to circumsize our DS, and we did it at the hospital to just have it done.  My sister waited a week and did it in clinic and I know she's been having a hard time with the healing process.

We've struggled a little with it as well.  It was never an option to not do it because we both wanted it.  Our doctor who did it though was very conservative, and we're still having to push the foreskin back to prevent adhesion and he's 2.

I know people say it should be the child's decision, but if they want it done when they're 13 it's a lot harder to do and a lot more surgical.  We chose to do it right away, and we're glad we did.  The only thing I've heard (and I've only heard it not researched it), is that if they are uncircumsized they have a higher rate of infections, and UTI's because bacteria can build in there.

  • I'm not sure if you've seen this, but I stumbled across this at one point and it's worked great for searching for things on the bump.

As for us, I leaned more towards not doing it, however DH had no hesitations and DS was circumcised. We chose to not do it right away since he was so small and wanted some other issues to correct themselves first, so his was done at the pediatrician's office when he was about 10 days old. As much as the "my husband has a penis so I'll let him decide" theory feels a little icky to me, it's essentially why I didn't put up much of a fight about it. For what it's worth, I'm totally fine with our decision now and DS has had no issues with healing and/or adhesion.

This!  I didn't do much research, but DH had very strong opinions about getting it done, so I didn't really argue.  I know my DH's uncle was not circumsized and he chose to get it done at a later age (in his 30's) and it was a really difficult procedure to get done later.  As far as the actual steps about getting it, my first DS was a NICU babe and  he had to go back to Children's about a week after he was born and my second DS had it done in the hospital.  I would check with insurance because some insurances are different.  My SIL had to have it done in the clinic vs. the hospital because of some insurance hiccup.  It was still a really expensive procedure.  I paid a $30 copay for my first DS and didn't pay anything for my second DS.  My SIL paid $800 for a clinic visit.  So check what the rules of your insurance are as well.

  • My husband and I never hesitated to have our DS circumcised.

We had it done in the hospital before we left. Our DS was 8 lbs. 13 oz when he was born and was healthy. There were no complications with the circumcision and he was fully healed after about 2 weeks.

It was easy to care for during the two weeks as well, and our LO seemed to tolerate it well.

Just thought I'd share our experience :)
