Thickening formula...how to adjust nipple

Per the instructions of our pediatrician, we add rice/oatmeal cereal to our 11 week olds bottle (reflux that has been significantly helped by adding 1 tablespoon of cereal to 4oz of formula).  My problem is, I never seem to get the nipple opened up just right (without any adjustment/opening, it won't flow.  I have tried using a needle to open the nipple a bit more but the flow is then too much).  Any recommendations on how to get a nice (not too quick, not too slow) flow?  We use the Dr. Brown's bottles....

Re: Thickening formula...how to adjust nipple

  • Some bottle brands sell nipples especially for this purpose. I'm not sure whether Dr. Browns does as we use Playtex bottles.

When we did this for DD1's reflux, we switched to the fast flow nipples. She was a bit older than your LO though when our pedi advised us to do this. You can always try a faster flow nipple (the opening is bigger) and see how your LO does with it.

  • We use Born Free bottles and going to a Level 2 nipple seemed to help. It sometimes gets clogged and I run the nipple under hot water and put it back on the bottle and that usually helps. Could you possibly try a different bottle brand just for the rice cereal feeding???

  • Dr. Brown's makes a Y-Cut nipple that says its for older babies but really works perfect for this very reason. The only place I've found them are at BRU or on Amazon.com. Our LO was put on rice cereal for the same reason a few weeks ago and we had the same problem. I found the Y-cut nipple and it made ALL the difference (no trouble at all getting it out and it also didn't come out too quickly).  We had to stop the rice cereal though because his tummy couldn't handle it, so now I've got all these Y-cut nipples unopened (I stocked up before realizing we wouldn't use them).

  • Don't cut it yourself, you can make the flow too fast.

Get the Y cut nipples for your bottles.

  • I add the same amount to our Dr Brown and use the step 2 flow nipples and it works just fine.
