VBAC

do any birthing centers do VBACs?

Starting to look into possible places to have a VBAC (I live in a small town where it's not a possibility, so I'm looking at the nearest big city).  I would like to do a birthing center if possible, but I'm not sure they will even try.  Has anyone actually heard of a birthing center doing VBACs?  Or should I just not waste my time and look only at the hospitals?

Re: do any birthing centers do VBACs?

  • Yes, they do!!! I live in a small town and am traveling 2 hours to deliver my baby when the time comes. A supportive midwife or doctor is so important I think. I'd recommend checking out birth centers and doctors that are supportive.. interviewing them.. and then making a decision.

    Good luck!!

  • I had my VBAC at a freestanding birth center. I interviewed 5 providers/birth places before settling on my CNM. GL!

  • It depends on the individual BC and state regulations.  Some states prohibit BCs from doing VBAC.  There is one BC in North Carolina that will do them but only if you were under their care in the pregnancy when you had your c/s.

I would call the birth centers you are thinking of and ask them.

  • The birth centers around here do not due to state regulations.  But it wouldn't hurt to call and ask.

It's kind of a bummer because even though I've had my successful VBAC, I still can't do it because of my previous c-section.  I don't quite feel confident with a home birth, but I think it would be interesting to try something else next time... but I'm stuck.

  • Yes, that is what I'm doing. Interesting enough though the center had to give up their accreditation to be able to accept VBACs. This doesn't bother me as the center has been open since the 90s and has never lost a mother or a baby. I had to go to 2 interviews with my surgical records to be accepted to attempt VBAC. I love the care I am receiving.

  • thanks for the feedback everyone.  I will start calling soon to find out-just thought if it's definitely a no then I wouldn't even waste my time calling BCs.  I also live in a small town and will be traveling 2 hours to do a VBAC, so I'm starting the researching process now before we TTC so I know what's available to me.

  • My birthing center will.  Before becoming a patient, I talked with the head midwife to make sure I was a good candidate for a vbac.  She thought I was, and here I am, awaiting to have my vbac at a center!

  • Ours will only do it after a previous successful VBAC..... So here's hoping for baby #3 :)
