Are you buying LO a winter coat?

I live in Ohio so we can have cold and snow until May. I feel like I need to buy him something other than just a hat and covering him with a blanket. I know that a lot of the car seats say not to put them in a bulky coat or snowsuit but I don't want him to get cold!

Anyone buying or bought one already?

Re: Are you buying LO a winter coat?

  • I don't have LO a winter coat, but some light jackets. I'm hoping that a blanket, hat, and the cover for the car seat will be plenty.

  • I didn't buy it, but a friend gave me two adorable fleecey "snow suits" that she had bought but didn't use for her baby. I am in Ontario so we probably have very similar weather, but I still won't use it in the car seat as I feel like the car will heat up and then he will be too hot if I he's in there in his coat. For walks in the stroller and trips to the park with the dog I think it will be perfect though!

  • I'm in Rhode Island and we have similar weather... it's already snowed once... and it'll be cold until about mid-April. We have lots of hats, gloves, and blankets but we also have the Bundle Me for the car seat.  All my friends and family who used it swear by it so we got one... all LO needs is a light jacket when under it, and if it gets too warm you can just unzip it off the car seat.

  • I also live in Ohio and highly recommend the Bundle Me by JJCole for your carseat. We had this for DS (born the end of October) and it was fabulous for the winter time!! We purchased a snow suit type coat for him, but he was way too hot in it and it was rarely used even through the snow. A Bundle Me and a good winter hat will be more than enough assuming your baby has a warm outfit on. We did a onesie and a sleeper most of the winter and it worked great! Hope this helps!

  • I plan on getting LO a snowsuit or the bundle me.  I kind of want both, but that is more than I need!  I live in Minnesota, so we have some what of similar weather. Winter lasts forever.  I am kind of leaning towards the bundle me because I am afraid that LO will grow out of his snowsuit before it warms up outside and we tend to be outside a lot in early spring (which still feels like winter) for my DS' soccer games.

That being said, I did have a snowsuit for my DS when he was young - I don't think they had the bundle me then or if they did I had no idea. He wore his snowsuit a lot, so we did get good use out of it.

  • I think the most we're doing is a light jacket since we're in Vegas.

We have this! I think it will be perfect instead of bundling LO up in a coat or snowsuit. There is a lot of controversy on them, however it's the same if not lighter in thickness as a coat or snowsuit so personally I feel comfortable using it!

  • I'm in New England.  We have a Bundle Me for the car seat and a snow suit for being outside for extended periods.  Coats are kind of a pain with little ones- layers and blankets are better.

  • I wasn't planning on it, but then got a 25 dollar gift card to babygap and also a 30% off deal. So I ended up with a 54 dollar coat for 14 :) I would like to have it since winter is so long here in Wyoming also!

  • Worth a read if you purchased a Bundle Me:

Both winter jackets and Bundle Mes are not safe to use with car seats. You are much better off getting a car seat cover (JJ Cole also makes these), which just goes over the top of car seat. Or you could use a couple of blankets and a hat. We also live in a very cold area, and did this with DD. Car seat safety is not something to take lightly.

To answer the OP I will be getting some sort of fleece suit for warmer winter days when I go out with DD, but LO will not wear it in his or her car seat.

  • We have a car seat cover and will just dress baby warm. I don't plan to have her out in the cold for very long periods so I think the cover and some warm clothes will be all she will need.

  • we will just be using blankets and some fleecy snow suits.  I'm leary of after market products for car seats so we haven't quite decided what we'll do, but in MN it gets VERY cold (aka January/Feb it's not odd for it to be up to -20 and with windchill even worse!).

No matter what I get for every day use I will be sure to have extra blankets and options in the car in case we get stranded or in an accident.

  • Nope.  If you really feel you need another layer - maybe get a larger fleece footie pjs and put them in that above all their other clothes.  But I'm in NY and dd was fine in her regular clothes plus a hat and blanket.  I had one of those shower-cap style coverings for the car seat and put that on for walking outside.  But I park in the garage at home, so really the only time we are out in the wind is while doing errands so I just closed the flap then.  Babies are like little furnaces anyways.  Sometimes her back would be all sweaty in the car seat even though I was freezing.
  • no , just light jackets. between the cover I had for the car seat and blankets she was always fine.

If you want something cozy, that can work with a car seat, I loved my one piece suit I got from LL Bean.  It runs big, so you can get the 0-3 and get tons of use out of it. My daughter, who has never been short, could even wear hers a year later just without the feet cuffs.

  • We found a thick fleece snowsuit type thing used for $6.00.  I am not planning on using it except if we plan to be outside for extended periods of time.  I don't anticipate going too many places in the bitter cold so I didn't want to buy something full price that we may only use once or twice.  For what is worth, it looks brand new so it doesn't look like the original owner used it much either.  I would not put anything too warm on LO when in the car just because the car will tend to be warm anyways.  Goodness, I sometimes feel warm with all my winter gear on!

  • No, I won't.  I love the cute little coats, but I found them to be a pain with DD.  They make it hard to get baby fastened safely in the car seat.  I'll just use blankets.  I also don't have a super cold climate to consider, so that may make a difference.

  • I don't think we will. I am hoping a thicker fleece will be enough.

  • No.  We have a fleece snowsuit for days it is extremely cold.  Other than that we use a fleece jacket, hat, and blankets.

  • We'll also be using a bundle me.  We live in New England and it's cold her for a while as well and the bundle me was find for DD #1 born in Nov.  Just a long sleeve and maybe a zip up sweatshirt and she was fine in that thing.  It's very warm.
