PTing - He wont poop!

DS is good about peeing on the potty but will not poop on the potty.

This leads me to not be consistent (put him in diapers/pull ups) because I am sick of cutting off and throwing out undies.  Those suckers arent cheap!  But when I put him in a diaper or pull-up, he wont pee on the potty so this is affecting his overall PTing.

We've offered treats and rewards, I've had him sit on the potty to try when I notice he's farting or if it's been all day and he hasnt gone.  He just wont go.  And the issue isnt that he's holding it, he just poops in his undies.

So what is the answer?  Undies full time and just keep throwing them away?  At a pair a day, this will be an expensive habit.  Stick with diapers?  He treats pull ups the same as diapers so I dont see them as a compromise.

Help please!

Re: PTing - He wont poop!

  • why are you throwing them away???   People who cloth diaper have poops in cloth all the time.... you scrape the poop out into the potty... and do loads of laundry just with the poop undies... there is no reason to throw away.  Did you throw away baby clothes every time the diaper had a blowout?
I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I would go with undies full time. If he poops in his undies, pull 'em down, plop the poop in the toilet, grab some spray and wash, squirt, and put them in the laundry.

If it is messy, just hold the whole pair in the toilet while you flush.

  • Oh, and what does he say when you ask him why he doesn't poop in the potty?

  • I think it's pretty common to be pee-trained before poop-trained. At least, it is with my friends with toddlers!

The key for us was catching her a couple of times mid-poop and getting her onto the potty to finish going. And finding her currency for rewards helped too. :)

But she's still only about pooping in the potty about 70% of the time. She just went in her underwear this morning. I just plop the poop into the toilet and throw the undies in the wash. Hang in there -- he'll get it (that's what I keep telling myself)!

    Ditto this.

And ditto washing out underwear in the toilet.  I can't even imagine throwing away every pair of poop underwear!

For us what worked was the whole finding the currency thing.

My first ADORED his Thomas underwear so we set it up on the bathroom counter and told him he could put it on once he put a poop in the potty.  He would BEG to wear his Thomas' when he got dressed each morning but we with held them saying "as soon as you poop in the potty you can put them on, OK?"

Once we'd gotten one catch like that Thomas would talk to him from his back side saying:  "Peep peep!  Don't poop on me!"  DH really hammed it up using the Thomas voice and saying how gross it was to be pooped on.  Dylan cracked up but it worked.  He had no problem pooping in underwear but pooping on Thomas seemed sacrilegious to him.

For Jace it was Buzz Lightyear underwear.

The other thing for us is that I KNOW when they need to poop.  I call it "poop belly" - their belly gets distended.  At almost 4 and 5 there are still times I'll see them getting into the tub, notice the distention and tell them they need to try to go poop because they'll sleep better if they do.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I have no advice since we are just starting out (though I think catching him mid poop could help). But I wanted to show some solidarity in the throwing out poopie underpants situation. I threw out a pair at BRUSH today. Perhaps if I had been home I would have tried to salvage them but honestly....it would be dh that would have to do the salvaging, it was a huge load that was much less solid than it sounds like others are dealing with. Not worth it to me, if it was a log...fine nut otherwise, no thanks.

  • Thanks for the advice.  If the poop is plop-able, I do just plop it in the toilet and wash the undies.  Unfortunately, most of his arent that solid and I'm half tempted to throw the pants away too!  I will try the rinse/flush idea.

And this is why I stopped CDing!  Maybe his poop is just extra nasty.  It makes me gag and I'm usually pretty good with gross bodily functions.

Usually nothing or it's too hard.  Today he said that it hurts.  He isnt constipated though so I dont get it.
