The Dentist

When was the first time you took your LO? Am currently researching dentists for DS.

Re: The Dentist

  • DS1 went when he was around 3. His pedi would keep up with his teeth before then and even then he just went for a cleaning. Before that we were dealing with other medical issues. DS2 hasn't been yet.

  • Well I just made an appointment for him. Wish me luck!
  • I should wait for Friday so I can admit flame-free my 5yo is still awaiting his first appt.  I know it should have been a long time ago but my insurance stinks and I am afraid of permanent damage. What a bad mommy! Hope you find a great one
  • Are you taking LO to a children's dentist?  DS has his first appointment in Dec., with my regular dentist.  Considered using a children's dentist, but thought we would try our dentist first.

I'm switching dentists and the new office has a pediatric dentist.
  • I posed the same question to one of my best friends whose Dad is a dentist. Here is her reply:

Once she cuts a tooth, she should "brush" (no paste, maybe just wet the bristles) twice a day. Formula has a lot of sugar in it, so he recommended against leaving a bottle in her crib with her and said to make sure to brush before she goes to sleep (i.e. don't have formula and then go to sleep...easy for him to say!). The "brushing" essentially is letting her chew on the bristles with maybe a little help to make sure the teeth get it (as opposed to just the gums).

He recommends starting to see the dentist at age 4. He said that a pediatric dentist was definitely the way to go.

    Hope that Helps!

  • I just took my LO this month - he's about 2.5 and did great, she confirmed that he has all of his teeth, which was good to know.  They recommend a visit every 6 mos, which I don't know if I feel is necessary just yet.

  • Lurker here...DD will be 18 months in a couple of weeks and has her first appointment next week with a pediatric dentist. My nieces (who live with us) see him and he recommended 18 month. Mostly just to get them used to it and to educate parents. 6 months ago when I took the big kids she got a toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. When I asked him about the fluoride he sais as long as the amount you use is less than peasized it's fine. He also said that if they ever get ahold of toothpaste and ingest a fair amount to just give them milk....
