Food Allergy

Rash and doctor not concerned ?

Hello, I'm just starting to look more into this but thought I'd post here for some quick input.

LO is still nursed and has 3 solid meals a day. One morning I decided to see if he'd like some cottage cheese and some kiwi. Before the meal was over, while he was still in his high chair, he had an immediate rash on his cheek- pretty dark red/purple and spread quickly.

Now, he had had kiwi before in a puree has had some dairy in the form of baby yogurt and some stage 3 food that listed heavy cream as an ingredient.

Called and got nurse at pedi's office. She put a note in the file and said we'd wait to discuss at his upcoming 1 year visit.

After that there was one more time where I was out of other options for breakfast and decided to try giving him my Greek yogurt instead of the YoBaby yogurt. Again, he had a rash- not quite as before but definately noticeable.

Well, today was our 1 year visit. The doctor doesn't seem to think anything of this and says that I can start my LO on whole milk. ???

So, yes, my baby didn't have breathing troubles (unless it was later during nap time). But, I read on-line that food allergy reactions sometimes become more severe with subsequent incidents. Wouldn't you want to do allergy testing? Or is a rash not bad enough?

 Thank you ladies.

Re: Rash and doctor not concerned ?

  • some doctors will ignore a rash.. mine did.. for 7 months until my son went into shock.  So follow your gut and get him tested.

IMO.. if he's getting a rash on his face every time you give him yogurt, i'd skip anything dairy related and get him tested before you do offer WCM.   His allergy might be very slight since he never reacted to your BM (unless you don't consume dairy), but i would still like to know if he is allergic and know his numbers weather or not you should avoid.

    Good luck!

  • has he had the yogurt or the kiwi without issue before?  If he has a rash every time you've given yogurt then I wouldn't offer it.  Has your LO had cheese without issue?  I'm kind of with your pedi on this one- I wouldn't offer milk right away without dong a little more experimenting with yogurt/kiwi.  It could have been the flavor of yogurt, the brand (different brands may have different preservatives etc.)- lots of things.  I'd get a benedryl dosage so you know what to do and only give like one small spoon full to see if anything happens.
