I've always thought it was French and spelled Marguerite.
There may be a version that is French, but dh's mom was Irish (actually born there) and this was her middle name. She passed away when he was 18 and I can't find anything that has her middle name spelled out. His dad is now passed away too, so I can't even ask him :-(

I do like the French spelling though. :-)
Even though your DH's mother was Irish, the name Marguerite is French in origin - the French form of the name Margaret.
I've seen it commonly as Marguerite. Margarite makes me think someone meant to write "Margarita" (the Spanish version of this name), but spelled it wrong by mistake.
Re: What is the correct spelling for Margareet?

Ditto. I think of the character with the same name in the movie "Ever After."

This is correct.

This. It's the only way I've ever seen it!
Yeah, I agree. It's a family name and she spelled it that way.
