Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Only 5 words at 19 months

My LO only says about 5 words at 19 months - up, mama, dada, hi, bye.  She tries to say a lot of other words, but they are not clear.  She always gets the first consonant, but the rest of the word is jumbled.  Even the word baby, which she says ALL the time, still comes out like baba.  The word finished sounds like "sha".  I can understand her fairly well, but other people have no idea what she is saying.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I know she understands almost everything I say because she can follow directions, and point out objects in books, etc.  I'm wondering if she's not hearing clearly, or if she might have some speech issues.  Any thoughts?

Re: Only 5 words at 19 months

  • My pedi only expects that they have 4-10 words at 18 months. She counts words as anything used consistently and recognizable by the primary caregivers. By those standards, it sounds like your LO is doing fine. I wouldn't worry.

  • Does she use the same sound for the same object/action every time? If so, it is a word. Clarity doesn't come until 3. DS was speaking in long, full sentences at 21 months, but the vast majority of his words were made up of slightly similar sounds instead of perfectly enunciated words.

  • If you can understand the word, and it's consistently the same sounds, it counts as a word.  It sounds like she's doing great.

  • That's sounds pretty normal.  My DD didn't really get a lot of words until 21 months.   But even now, I don't understand a lot of what she is saying.  It took me three days of her screaming "Ma Ba" to realize she was asking for her blanket.

  • If you ask me or DH, DS has a ton of words. If you ask a stranger, they probably think he barely has any. :) It's totally normal to only say the beginning of words, not say them very clearly, etc. at this age.
  • I'm glad you posted this!  After the post yesterday about all the super babies, I was feeling kind of Indifferent about DS' words (he is 18 months also).  I agree with PP, I think a lot of times they are actually identifying things by "words" that we just can't quite understand yet.  To me, I try to understand a little more just to know that DS is understanding what I'm saying...ie...if I ask him "are you ready for a bath" or "can you throw this away" and just see if he is making improvement that way.  It will come eventually!
