Hand-me-downs: would you take kids' swimsuits?

I'm packing up a bag of DD's stuff for my cousin and his wife who just found out they're having a girl. I found a few swimsuits she's grown out of (3T) and  can't decide whether it's weird or not to give them to my cousin? I mean, I personally wouldn't wear hand-me-down swimsuits... and by the age of 3, DD was not wearing swim diapers. So I should just toss them, right?

Re: Hand-me-downs: would you take kids' swimsuits?

  • I don't see why not. If you wash them, they should be just fine! Plus, it's always good to have a backup swimsuit, just in case...I learned that the hard way while babysitting! The hand-me-downs can be the "emergency" ones.

  • I would use a hand me down suit.  After it's washed, I don't see where it would be an issue??  I have to send a swim suit to DS's preschool in the summer for their water play days and they take a beating.  I'd happily send a hand me down suit and not worry about them getting ruined (it's amazing how hard they are on swim suits at school).
  • I don't see a problem with it.

  • My some just used several from his two cousins this past summer... I would wash and hand them down, if they feel funny accepting them they cam toss them

  • I would never for myself so I wouldn't for my LO either. Personal preference. I don't like the idea of sharing anything that goes in a person's private area no matter how much it's washed. I have a couple girlfriends who have borrowed the other's thong underwear before because "its been washed so its ok" and I just could never do that!

See, this is what I was thinking as well. Obviously, they've been washed, and my cousin would probably wash them too... but I wouldn't use a hand-me-down swimsuit either. I guess, I'll give them to her and if she doesn't feel comfortable using them, she can toss them herself.

    Indifferent o my!

But I agree, I personally would not.

  • Ew to the thong thing...just...ew. That's not okay. But a swimsuit that hasn't gone...you know..."up there" is a little different, I think. A lot of kids wear liners of some kind with theirs, so it would probably be just fine, but to each his own.

Even swimsuits that don't go, you know, *points up there*, still come into contact with genitalia. Not saying that OP or anyone's children have infections or anything of the sort, but it is obviously a personal preference as to whether or not someone would want to wear an item of clothing that comes into contact in such an intimate location. And FWIW, after working at a daycare, camp and preschool for 4 1/2 years, I've never seen kids wear liners in their bathing suits.

OP I would agree with pp and give them to your cousin and just tell her no hard feelings if she decides not to use them.

  • Well, if they weren't using any sort of liner, that's probably different.

  • I personally wouldn't. I'm also in the camp of swimsuits are like underwear. If it was a baby/small toddler one where they would be wearing a diaper for sure anyway, not an issue.

I do just about anything used except for under clothes, swimsuits, and pjs. That is true for my whole household.

  • Personally, I wouldn't. I agree with pp, I wouldn't do that for myself, so I wouldn't take or give away a hand me down bathing suit. From/for anyone, not even my own siblings.
