Hi Moms!
My first post, so here goes. My son was diagnosed with moderate Plagiosephely (sp), fancy word for a flat spot on the rear right side of his head. It all started with a diagnoses of Torticullus (tight neck muscles on one side) and as a result he favors looking to one side. We have him in PT for the neck and he just started wearing a helmet for the flat spot on his head. I just wanted to connect with any moms who have little ones with helmets. We keep having issues with a skin reaction. The reaction is nothing that bothers him, but looks fierce. I am close to the point of just saying forget the whole helmet thing and letting nature take it's course but I would feel awful if as a child he has to deal with any more torment than the norm. KIds can be so mean.
So...any moms out there who have a "helmeted" child? Any moms who decided against the helmet? If so what were the outcomes?? Mostly I'm just looking for any advice!

Re: Cranial Reshaping Helmet
DS had a helmet and we also had problems with his skin. He was getting a fungus from it and contact dermatitis. First I would try to contact wherever you go for you helmet and express your concerns. If they are unable to help you then make an appointment with your pedi and show them the irritation from the helmet. They may be able to prescribe you a cream for him or give you other suggestions. I'm sorry you are going through thus but don't give up just yet! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you so much for your advice! We are actually having better luck this go around. A slight red spot on the cheek but it disappeared relatively quickly. Hopefully this evening when he has it off for bath time it'll all be good. We do have an appt on Tuesday to go in.
I actually do have another question though. He now seems to have an itchy head. The specialist did say to try cornstarch powder if it persists which I was planning on applying tonight. Did you have this issue and if so any advice.
I have no experience firsthand, but my best friend's son had to wear a helmet for 23 hours/day for 3 months. It was rough - just a hard transition, sleep-wise, but they got through it!! Just like everything else, ya know..
It's the best thing for them and you should feel awesome about making the right decision. Some people opt out of it, which blows my mind.
