Those with older kids, when did they "get" sheets/blankets?

Up until we put the boys in toddler beds, we just had them in footed sleepers. When we moved them to toddler beds we tried tucking blankets in and putting the boys under them.  Of course, they don't get the concept and throw the blankets out of the bed, sleep on top of them, kick them off etc. So I'm wondering, when do they "get" the concept of sheets and blankets? (I'm asking because I have all sorts of hand-me-down adorable jammies that they keep growing out of because they need to be in warmer PJs.)

  • the boys have had some sort of blanket since they were 2. and when they went to toddler beds (at 3), they got a thicker blanket, but no sheets. only about 6 months ago, did they stop freaking out when they kicked their blankets off. man, i hated being woken up to replace a friggin blanket!

  • My kids have always had blankets in their bed. DS1 didn't start using it until he was in his big boy bed, he made that transition at 2 y/o.

  • Our girls sleep with a small quilt-type blanket and thermal blanket every night since the weather got colder.  They love being covered up and having their "babies" (soft dolls) covered up at bedtime ; )  They don't really move them around very much. When I check on them before I go to bed, I cover them back up if they're uncovered.

  • We just started.  They moved to toddler beds in August but there was no need for blankets in the summer.  Now that it is getting colder, we are giving them fleece blankets to put over them.

  • My almost 3 year old still just snuggles with her blankets and never actually keeps them on her...lol
  • Mine was about 18 months, and about 2 he could replace them on his own when he woke up cold. Do you ever cuddle with pillows and blankets on the couch or during playtime? I think DS was always a big snuggler.

I can't even tell you how happy I am to hear that my son isn't the only one who freaked out when his blanket was off.  Drove me bonkers.  We too have moved past that stage.  I don't understand why it's so hard to get back under the blanket by yourself!

My son moved into a twin bed at 21 months and he had a sheet and blanket at that time.  He never got out of bed after we said goodnight...I know, he has always been such an easy child.  So not like his younger sisters!  So he pretty much stayed under his covers for much of the night.

  • My girls are 3.5, they moved to toddler beds when they were 3.  I'd say it took 6 months to even kind of get used to the concept of sleeping under the sheets and blanket.  Even now, I often find them on top of their comforter because they're so hot.
  • They still don't really get it.  I don't use top sheets and they sleep with fleece blankets.  I usually go in before I go to bed and cover them again.  The blankets are usually on the floor or only half on.
