Changing Doctors So Late...

I'm feeling social lately :)

I was wondering if anyone would ever consider changing their Dr this late in the game. I'm 32 weeks (tomorrow) and I'm really considering it. I haven't checked with my insurance co. yet to see if they'd have an issue with it so I don't even know if I can.

I've been going to Evergreen Women's Health Care in Nashua NH and I really kind of hate them. I pretty much wanted to switch right away but DH kept telling me I was overreacting so I stuck it out. Now I'm realizing that I'm actually hoping my Dr isn't available when I go into labor because I don't really know if I want her to be the one who does my delivery...I feel like that's a pretty big deal but I'm sort of thinking I waited too long and I should just suck it up for the next 8 weeks. If anyone wants to hear all the gory details I'd gladly share them so you have some context, but I kinda figure no one wants them.

Your thoughts?

Re: Changing Doctors So Late...

  • I don't know what the issues you're having are, but if it's possible to change providers then I would.  You only get to have this baby once, and I think you should be able to feel confident and comfortable with the person who is going to be there for labor and delivery.  If my providers weren't on board with the way I want to do things, I would definitely switch.  I wouldn't worry about hurting anyone's feelings.

  • Is there another doctor in the same practice that you could switch to? I guess for me it would depend on why I hated the dr so much and also what my insurance had to say about it. From what I know and have experienced the dr really only does the catching anyway. Maybe you could just deal with it? IMO it's much better to have good nurses.

  • I don't think it's too late at all. Check with your insurance first though! The most important thing is for you to be happy with who will be helping you through this journey!

  • We just switched this past Monday 10/31 and I am so happy we did.  I would definitely encourage you to go with your gut - it never hurts to look around and at least you'll feel more in control and comfortable when the big day comes.
  • If you don't like your doctor then you should change. Especially if you haven't had any complications or anything like that. I want to deliver at a hospital other than the one that is right down the street but I would have to change OBs and I decided it just wasn't worth it to me. If it was an issue with my actual doctor though, I would change for sure.

  • Thank you guys! I just called my insurance and they said they don't give a crap if I switch, then I called an office I've heard a lot of great things about and they're going to make sure they can take me and give me a call back. Even the girl on the phone seemed so much warmer than the people I've been dealing with!

The only reason I started going to Evergreen was because for the 1st 3 months I didn't have health insurance (I had JUST started a new job when I found out) and they offered a 40% discount if you were uninsured. Now that I have insurance (even though it's crappy) I can go to a REAL doctor!! Yey :)

  • Someone posted on the 3rd trimester board a few weeks ago that they changed Dr.s, and they were 37 weeks along!  As long as the baby is in you, it's not too late to change to a different doctor.

  • I moved when I was 34+ weeks pregnant with DD (and by moved I mean 2.5 hours away) so I had a new doctor. I had seen her for one other appointment and I loved her even more than my original OB. It was great!

  • That happened to me I was at a womens health care place with 5 diff docs. I liked one. So I stuck with it through all the horrible visits with some of the others. When I found out the one I hated the most was on call I had a melt down. I tried to get the one I liked to promise to deliver my baby but no one would swithc with me. I was already a week over due when they were checking me and telliing me I was going to have it one way or another that weekend. I flipped out emotionally and screamed at my mom to take to the local vet, before I'd let that *** touch me. The councelor over heard me in the waiting room, and pulled me aside. My H and I lived in a very small town and that was the only practice short of a 5 hour drive. There was an Gynecologist in the area who used to be a OB. The councelor told me to go talk to him. So my mom and I left the office and went to the Gyno Dr. Stokes 10 minutes later. I tried to talk to him but I was still hormonal from earlier my mom explained, and he in 30 min. He had me at the hospital getting ready for an induction, since he was flying out to his daughters graduation on the opposite coast in 2 days. So yes I waited until 30 minutes before going into labor before switching Docs. My H was surprised to get called out of work that morning.

  • I changed to a new OB practice at 29 weeks, so yes, I would absolutely change at this point if you aren't happy where you are.
  • I switched at 30 weeks and I love my new doctor. He's amazing and such a sweet person. Before my appointment, we had a sit-down and got to know each other first. That was really great. So, I don't think it's bad if you make a good choice.  I looked up doctors in my area and looked up reviews...the reviews were right on!

  • Hi Tracilaroo,

Since we are in the same area (Escondido) do you have a doctor nearby? My husband and I just moved to Escondido and I am not sure my doctor will be able to come that far when it is time for birth. I am going to call and talk to her but I was hoping there was someone else in the area of Escondido that could give recommendations as well as the hospital you went too and any type of places you went for planning?

    Thanks
