Pregnant after a Loss

? About Travel/Taxis and LO

DH and I were talking about how nice it will be for me to be on mat leave with LO for a year. Usually our travel times are restricted to school breaks - when flight and hotel prices are jacked up. So it'll be nice to travel at normal costs, and depending on the baby and how he travels, we'd like to  travel a little bit while I"m off.

In particular it will be nice to travel to NYC with DH when he's there for work. We used to live there and I don't get there often enough to see friends, etc. But we were wondering... how do you get around? I mean, obviously the subway, and our feet, but sometimes taxis might be necessary. But how can you do that with a LO? I guess you just don't? Huh. I guess you just don't!

Re: ? About Travel/Taxis and LO

  • There was a NYC mom on my BMB asking about if she needed a car seat for her LO or not.  Apparently in NYC, LOs do not have to be in a car seat in a taxi.  I'm really not sure how I feel about that, but ALL public transportation does not require seat belts or car seats (I'm thinking buses) so why is a taxi different.

  • I live in NYC and it seems as though most moms either don't take taxis at all when babies are small and if they do, use a car seat (special occasions...not just going a few blocks) OR if they do take them, they just hold baby in their lap or in a bjiorn.

I imagine I'll be taking the subway with baby for the most part. We don't have a car, so I'm not sure we'll buy a carseat (may try and borrow one for the trip home from the hospital). I think mostly, I'll look for any excuse to just walk everywhere. I'm not looking forward to lugging a stroller up and down subway stairs. I guess that's one way to lose baby weight!

  • I live in NYC. Taxis and car service are exempt from car seat laws. If I know I am taking a taxi or subway, I use my Maclaren stroller. folds easily. Never put it in the trunk of the taxi. Fold it and keep it by your feet just in case yourself (but more likely) the taxi driver does not forget and drive off with the stroller. I usually hold DD on my lap or hold her tight beside me. It is a bit unnerving at first, but you get used to it. Remember, really the only time you are going on a highway in a taxi is to and from the airport. In Manhattan you are only going across the city and mostly stuck in traffic anyway.

Taking the subway is more of a PITA. I have all subway stations with escalators and elevators memorized. Usually someone will help carry the stroller up and down the stairs. I have become an expert at bumping DD down the stairs in her stroller. Now that she is older, I fold the stroller, carry it over the shoulder (which Maclaren strollers come with a shoulder strap), hold my purse/diaper bag on the same shoulder. With my other hand, I hold DD's hand and we walk up and down the stairs. This time around, I will be doing all that plus wearing the baby. I'll be like a Sherpa!

By far the easiest are buses or taxis. With buses, you must hold LO, fold the stroller but it's SUPER easy.

If you have any other questions about being in NYC with LO, pm me.

Me too please! I have been looking at the MTA website and trying to figure this out. Still, no matter how many times I go to Union Square, for market day, I can't find the elevator entrance. Seriously, it's almost laughable at this point!

The logistics of travel in NYC, especially during winter, have been stressing me out as LO's arrival draws near. I think I'll be walking and spending time in my neighbourhood when I'm out with LO on my own. The thought of trudging up and down the subway stairs in the sleet and snow just seems too unappealing.

For travel in cabs, like trips to the Pedi, I plan on using my snap and go stroller and car seat. DH and I actually just took a short course on the installation of our car seat in cabs and rental cars this past weekend. We know that cab drivers have no patience for riders, so now we know how exactly to get that thing in and out in under a minute. It's a weird situation here, especially if you don't have a car (we don't), but we're trying to make it work. Still unsure how we're getting home from the hospital! May have to rent something, even though we're just riding across the park...it's so complicated!

  • Thanks everyone. I'll take the elevator/subway station cheat sheet, too! We used to live in NYC and I thought I'd be there when we had a baby (didn't happen that way) and I wondered what on earth people did. Thanks so much!

Basically, any "bigger" subway station will have escalators and. Times Sq and Grand Central have elevators. The elevator at Grand Central from the main terminal (it's beside the escalators just off the entrance on 42nd by the running store) just sucks. It stinks like homeless people and pee. I usually take the escalators there. Times Sq has nice elevators, but REALLY slow and can be packed with people (one of my NYC pet peeves are people who are able bodied, don't have strollers or suitcases taking the elevator at Times Sq.). Union Sq. has an escalator (by the Starbucks on the East side). 59th St, 72nd (on the UWS) and basically any higher traffic station. The way I remember, if an express train stops there, it will most likely have an escalator. My arms, thighs and legs toned so quickly with the subways and all the walking to a further station with an escalator. Also how I'm keeping my weight down this time.

We are one of the few who have a car. It's really only used on weekends to my IL's summer home in NJ, skiing during winters and when we drive to Toronto to visit my family (paying an arm and a leg for parking is starting to get to me). Coming home from the hospital (NY presb), we took a taxi. We strapped DD's car seat in with a seat belt (which you can do with graco). I honestly think that was the only time we ever used a car seat in a taxi. This time around we will do the same.
