MSG with MSPI - yes or no?

So the sausage I got for part of a recipe tonight has MSG - ARGH!  I know its bad for you but what about MSPI babies - is MSG a no-no?

  • As far as I know, it's okay.  (But you're right, it's not so great for anyone).  Applegate Farms sausage is free of MSG as is Aidell's.  I have seen Aidell's at Super Target and Applegate Farms is sold at natural grocer type stores.

  • MSG is just a no-no in general IMHO.

    Could you find another recipe?

  • i've never seen a problem for MSPI... but GMO is bad in general (like pp said).  BUT you are most likely eating it now without knowing it. Unless the package says "NON GMO" than it's in your diet. It's so hard to avoid unless you go 100% organic 100% of the time. and even then you are probably still consuming some products with GMO..
  • MSG = monosodium glutamate, an artificial flavor enhancer

GMO = genetically modified organism, which may or may not contain additives

Since you already have the sausage you might as well eat it and get it out of the house.  If you yourself don't have a problem with it, there's no increased likelihood that your nursing child will due to MSPI.  But in the future I would avoid buying anything with MSG (or autolyzed/hydrolyzed yeast extract, which acts in the body the same way MSG does) in it.  I have a terrible reaction to it; full migraine for at least 24 hours, diarrhea, gut pain, etc.   My kids are both just as sensitive to it, yet my DH has no problem with it.  It's just nasty stuff in general that has no health benefits.
