My LO is almos 4 months old. Originally I was going to EBF until he turns 6 months, but I feel like my milk is not enough for him. He would drink 5.5 oz and after 2 hours hungry again. This happens throughout the day. He nurses every 4 hours at night though. My estimates are that he eats about 40 oz a day of BM. So maybe he is ready for solids? How did you know that your LO was ready for solids and how did you start?
TIA
Re: When and how did you introduce solids?
DS #1 didn't start on solids until nearly 7 months. DS #2 we started at 5.5 months or so....but I wish we had waited longer. He had a really upset tummy for at least 2 weeks after starting solids.
If he is hungry every 2 hrs, just feed him. Their digestive tract really isn't ready to digest solids much before 6 months. Breastmilk is giving him all the nutrients he needs to grow. Breastmilk digests completely in less than 2 hours so frequent nursing is common in babies.
As to the 5.5 oz....that's a lot of milk to give a baby and can stretch their stomach. Usually they don't need more than 4 or 5 oz at one time at that age. Try feeding him frequently but offering less oz. You might be suprised that he's still satisfied.
Don't rush the solids, they really don't hold much nutritional value for a baby and you don't want him to replace milk with solids until much closer to 1 year old.
