XP: Would you ask a friend to watch LO overnight?

So, we don't have any family within 8 hours.  I'm seriously considering asking a neighbor who has babysat for us to watch DD overnight for pay, of course.  Would you do this or does this make me a bad Mom - and crazy friend for asking?  We have not been overnight without DD ever.

  • I would and I have. We also live far from family but sometimes you just do what you have to do.

Heck I'd do it now if I could find someone here in our new place....a babysitter is next on my list to tackle.

  • I am terrible about asking for help so I most likely would not.  but, if I had no family close by and there was an issue (like for the birth of a new baby or something similar) I would, I suppose.

  • I have family close by, so haven't been in this position, but I've taken in my friends 3 boys without batting an eye.

I think you should just ask, making it very clear they can say no with no hard feelings.

  • YES, go for it!! It doesn't make you a bad person/mother/parent at all, and I hate that you would think that. Everyone needs a break now and then and over a yr is plently long to go without. I hope she says yes and you guys have a great night out!
  • If you think that they would be open to it - then I figure it can't hurt to ask!    They can always say no if they feel like it would be too much for them - or you can read their response when you bring up the subject.   Everyone needs a night to themselves!!!    It does not make you a bad parent.    To the contrary - I think good parenting starts with a good marriage.   You guys need to take time for the two of you, too!

  • Our group of friends regularly watch either others kids overnight.  Of the 4 couples only one has in town family.  Recently our friends went to europe for a week, we took the kids on both weekends they were gone.

Do you have friends who would be willing to do so without pay?  We all just trade time without really keeping track.

  • In your situation, yes I would. You know your neighbor and your child better than we do though so as long as you think it won't be traumatic for either of them, I say do it!! and have fun!!
