Is it too early to bust out "Elf on the shelf"

This will be our first year doing it. And the kids are having REAL issues with listening lately.

If I bring it out now do you think the novelty will wear off? Or should I just grin and bear this and wait until after Thanksgiving?

  • our elf will be arriving from Santa sometime this week :)  I'm willing to risk the novelty wearing off a bit.

  • This will also be our first year doing it as well.  I was just thinking about when to start it.  I think I'm going to wrap it up and leave it at the door for when they get home from school one day.  May start this week.  Not sure.

Plus, it's ME that the novelty would wear off for if we started it this early!  lol

  • wow am i the only one who thinks it's mean?  my kids would be so upset if they misbehaved and thought santa would hear :(

or do i have it wrong?  i googled it.

  • I don't think it's any different than me getting coal for Christmas when I was kid when I didn't behave.

I'm not going to not get them anything for Christmas if they didn't behave. But you can get they won't get some of the things that they would get. I'm not going to indulge in them if they can't behave. Sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do to get things that you do want.

It wasn't the only thing I got. But it did make me think about what I could've gotten instead of the coal.

My mom had a friend whose son (3 or 4 at the time) misbehaved at the Christmas Eve service, and Santa didn't come the next day. So freaking awful. Christmas is a time for love and giving. I think it's weird to perverse it into something else, just to try to get your children to behave a bit more than normal.

  • We do it but I don't threaten them with it.  The elf just brings treats and stuff and tells Santa all the good things the kids do.

The first year I got it it scared the bejeezus out of DS, so we put it away and the next year he thought it was the coolest thing ever.

  • My kids love it!   I'm not ready to pull it out yet (just because I am not ready to go in the attic).

And oh my, holy over sensitive kids!

p.s I also got sticks and coal but tons of other goodies too (as a child).

    All in good folklore.

  • Ours isn't coming until the day after Thanksgiving.  The novelty definitely wears off.  And I run out of new places to put him every night!

Ours is definitely more about fun and positivity.  He tells Santa the good things they did, he's bringing a Lego Advent calendar for the boys and tix for Avery and I to see a local Nutcracker production when he arrives,  and he does silly things.  Their favorite last year was that he dumped out some flour on the island and laid in it to make pretend snow angels.  :)

I have, however, been known to see a deer in the neighbor's yard near bedtime, and if they are being jerks, I show them and tell them it's a reindeer probably sent by Santa because he had a feeling they were misbehaving.  It's worked, so I'm not ashamed!  lol
