Beco vs. Ergo

LO is only 10lbs, but he's already getting heavy in the Snugli carrier. As a result, DH and I are considering getting another carrier - probably either a Beco or an Ergo. I'm only saying these carriers because they're the ones I've heard the most about online...which one is best? I'm 5'6" and DH is 5'8" if that makes any difference. I have a DIY Moby, but he doesn't seem very comfy in that yet and it gets warm quickly. If you know of any other brands of carriers that you'd rec', please share! Thanks so much!!

Re: Beco vs. Ergo

  • Both are great carriers but there are a few differences.  1) In the Ergo LO can't face out in a front carry like it can with one of the Beco carriers.   2) The Ergo is lighter in terms of fabric.  I have heard from people that have used both that the Ergo is better in warmer weather.  3) The Ergo has a sleeping hood which the Beco does not.  4) The Beco includes an infant insert and can be used from birth.  The Ergo is meant for babies 4-5 months+.  They do sell a separate infant insert but reviews are mixed.

I have an Ergo Sport and I love it.  I'm 5'6" and it works great.  My Mom and sister have also used it and they're 5'8" and 6'0".  The waistband of the sport extends a lot farther than the original Ergo so your DH would be able to use it too.

  • Thank you! I'm going to check out that post. Love the idea of the lighter fabric of the Ergo (we're in FL currently), but kind of bummed that LO couldn't face out in it.

we're in FL too....but facing out is a must for me and baby. They love looking out especially when they are older.

they have some good videos on youtube to show how to use it and the differences of each.  Good luck deciding! (I am bummed that I cannot try the Beco's anywhere near me....no store near me carry them. But sites have return policies.

  • I went through the same debate and ended up with the Beco Gemini because I liked having the option of wearing DS on the side or facing out in addition to front and back. Now that I have tried both, I'm happy that I went with the Beco. It is much less bulky, doesn't require a newborn insert, and is very easy to get baby in/out of on my own when DH is not around. DS is only 11 weeks and has great neck control and he already prefers facing out, so I'm glad I have that option.

  • if you are in Clermont you should join our babywearing group OTown Slingers (find us on facebook) before you buy anything. We have a lending library and you can come try out different carriers to see what you will like best plus you can meet other babywearing mamas and dads!

Have you tried a Boba? I carry those in my store because i really prefer them over the other SSCs. They don't have a facing out option because its not recommended from a physical development standpoint.

there's a lot of research on this  i can send you (im a babywearing educator) but here's what Boba has to say about why they don't make a facing out option
