Running while pregnant

I know there are quite a few running moms on here so I was just wondering if your OBs okayed running while pg. I have a 10K on t-day and the princess half marathon at the end of february that I've been training for. I see the doctor on wednesday so plan to ask him his thoughts on it all. Also I do galloway's interval training if that makes a difference.

Re: Running while pregnant

  • I ran with both pregnancies until the day I went into labor.  As long as you were running before, you should be ok.  Of couse, listen to your body and don't go for any PRs.  For me (especially with DD#2), running anything more than 8 miles after ~24 weeks was uncomfortable on my joints long after I was done running, so I stuck with shorter distances from that point on.    Personally, I would have a wait and see attitude about the half mary, but the 10k should be no problem.  Just be sure to get yourself a nice maternity support belt.  Gabrialla makes one that's awesome for keeping the baby lifted off your bladder.

  • I think everyone and every pregnancy is different.  I did run a 1/2 marathon when I was pregnant with Hayden, but I was barely pregnant and didn't even know it yet.  Running the first time around kept giving me preterm contractions, so I didn't run after 5 months or so and I can't remember when I quit the 2nd time.  It was really painful on my joints and I had to pee all the time, so it was a pain.  Plus, I had end of summer babies, so it was very hot during the last few months.

You should be fine for the 10K, but I don't know if I would do the 1/2.

  • Thanks for the advice. I've heard the princess half is way easier then most half marathons b/c you stop a lot for pictures and I know some even walk the wohle thing. I'm just thinking that might be a lot especially since my uterus likes to contract constantly while pg plus the pee breaks might be annoying. We're going to disney for the long weekend either way so I can definitely wait and see how it goes. I might even decide the day before if I can do it or not.

  • I ran a half with Isaac but didn't know I was pg!  I even had a PR.  But then I went running a couple weeks later and spotted (I suspected I was pregnant just no confirmation yet) and that was the end of running for that pregnancy.  I probably would have been fine, but had just suffered a m/c and I was just too scared.  With P I ran to the 5 months mark then I was just too huge.  I had to give up on my half marathon during my pregnancy with P, but I was six+ months by then and it wasn't happening.

If you need to work out, I recommend Oh Baby or some pregnancy fitness DVDs.  You get the toning and exercise without all the jolting running can do.  Also, swimming was great and also walking.

  • As others have said, totally listen to your body.  I was doing boot camp and crossfit my entire pregnancy, but did find running the hardest, mainly because my belly was squishing my bladder.  Around 6 months is when I found running any long distances to just be too much for me, but I could do short sprints without any issues.  I remember my OB saying whatever you were doing before you got pregnant was fine, just don't set an PR's while preggo.  Good luck!
  • How the crap did I miss that you were pg again???  Congrats girl!

  • My good friend was a big runner and she did a half at about 5 months and a 10k at almost 8 months.  I think as long as you have been a runner for a while and stay consistent with it, you should be fine as long as you have a normal pregnancy.  It should actually be really great for you and make labor easier!  Way to go!
