Milk leaking out the side of his mouth?

When my LO BF, he ends up with a half wet shirt and milk all over his face and chest.  It drains out the side of his mouth and down his face.  Is that normal?  It seems like quite a bit leaks out!  And this is while he's actively sucking, not at rest.

  • I was told that if you can see milk come out of the side of the mouth it means you have a good supply. My son has milk come out of the sides of his mouth sometimes, it reassures me that he is getting enough milk.

  • This happens with DS all the time. When I take him off the breast he has milk all over his face, coming out the corners of his mouth. He truly looks milk drunk.

This can also be an indication of weak suck.  Is he gaining weight well and nursing well otherwise?  Is it all the time?

  • This happened to mw at the start, I had to stuff a burp cloth in my bra to catch it. Mine was due to a fast letdown, if LO unlatched I'd squirt her in the farce!

  • It can either be an indication of a forceful letdown or an improper latch.

I had the same problem and saw a LC. She said it was either/or and it turned out to be a forceful letdown combined with a really good milk supply.

  • This often happens with DD. I just put a very absorbent bib on before she eats to protect her clothes, but she certainly seems to get plenty of milk. Some LOs are just messy eaters and I think it is worse if you have a fast letdown.

  • LO did this for a while and I stuffed a prefold cloth diaper in my bra to catch the spills.

I had a forceful let down. LO has adjusted and never dribbles now.

  • Thanks ladies!  I worked with a  LC a lot while in the NICU and she noticed the milk coming out the side and said that it was ok but at the time, it wasn't soaking his clothes.  Glad to hear we aren't the only ones but I will follow up with the LC to see what they say too.
