DIY Maternity Jeans

So I spent most of today looking for a nice long pair of maternity jeans.  I am thinking about sewing my own.  Has any tried it?  If so, how did it turn out?

  • I made some with DS1 and they turned out really well. MIL showed me how. She said that when she was pregnant with DH that all the maternity stuff looked like tents so she just made her own. The way she knew how to make them was an older style with a full belly in the front and elastic at the top. I made some by cutting off the waist band and zipper on some goodwill jeans and sewing a bella band on top. I got bella bands used as well and a children's resale shop.

  • I did it!!! I am so proud of myself.  I guess those sewing classes from high school paid off.  So excited and I think I will treat myself to something special with all the money I saved.
  • Thanks for posting this... I'm so tempted to try it.

  • As an FYI . . . Motherhood Maternity has some really nice bootcut jeans in long length that are only about $40 . . . I LOVE them.

By the time you buy the jeans to maternize and the panel for the belly band, it might be just as easy to buy them.

Good luck and post pictures if you do decide to make them!

Yes I have those same exact pair from Motherhood and love them!  Unfortunately those were the only ones I could find that fit me.  If I could find the same style as those I would buy them in every rinse.  I actually used those as a guide to making my own pair.  I used jeans I already owned and an old cami t-shirt so basically it cost me nothing but time.  I am planning to make some more including yoga pants and pants for work.  I am very excited.  Big Smile

  • This looks great I'm going to look for jeans at a thrift store most of them are $5 and I know I have old tshirts that I can use for this that I was going to use for rags. Thanks for the post.

  • I saw someone on etsy doing this for about $20/pair, if you're not o talented with your sewing skills.

There are a bunch of tutorials on youtube.  I also bought 1 pair of maternity pants from the store so that I could see how to really make them.  If I figure out how to post pics, I will.
