BP after c/s (kinda long)

Anyone else have high BP after their c/s? The hospital was going to keep me another day because my BP was 150/105 when they took it by machine yesterday morning (it was around 145/93 since the night before) so the nurse took it manually and it was around 146/85ish. My BP is normally around 120/70. My OB was comfortable with the manual BP and said it was more accurate and discharged us. I told them I had a headache also but my OB said it could be sinuses. When I got home, my headache continued all night. My father has a self-taking BP machine that he let me borrow, so I took my BP a few times. The lowest reading I got was 138/86 (which was the first reading I took). The other readings were 142/90, 139/93, and then this morning I got 160/94 in my left arm but I took it again in my right arm and it was 145/91. Thankfully my headache is gone and I hope it doesn't come back. I'm still in a lot of pain from c/s (actually a lot more pain than I remember being in from my c/s with my son), so I am still taking percoset and Advil. Do you think the Percoset could cause the high BP? Or maybe its high because of the pain? Did anyone else have this issue? My OB told me to call and make an appointment this week to get my BP checked when I get my staples removed. Should I be concerned with my BP and call my OB now or just relax and wait until I can get an appointment?

Re: BP after c/s (kinda long)

  • I don't think it's the percocet.  I had high BP's before i delivered and then after my c-sect. they got worse.  my Dr. said that it's common after surgery and could take up to 2wks to get back to normal.  I wouldn't call unless your bottom # was above 100 (that is what i was told to do) ,that is the more important of the 2 numbers.  good luck!

  • I am a labor and delivery nurse and you could have pre eclampsia. This can make your bp go up before, during or after delivery. Symptoms of this are headache, blurry vision, epigastric pain, nauea and vomiting. If you have any of these you need to be checked out. This could cause a seizure up to 30 after delivery.

  • I have PIH, so my BP's were elevated before my c-section..and then worsened after delivery (they should have gotten better..but my hormones threw my body out of whack)..so I'm on BP meds..just keep an eye on your BP and if it creeps up, call the Dr.  also call if you get any new symptoms that could be worrisome so they can do labs to rule out a worsening condition
  • Before delivery, my ob told me to call if my bp was higher than 140/90. My bp dropped immediately after my c/s, but I would call if it remained high.
  • My bp was higher in the hospital when i was bf ( the nurses said it was bc of the uterus contracting pain. i noticed it was higher when i was in more pain and mosly when i was due for another pain pill or nursing. if you are concerned and having headaches i would call your ob
