Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby always crashes asleep in carseat - feel like I am trapped at home!

My 6 week old is following a generally 3 hour routine of "eat activity sleep". However, this is resulting in me feeling like I am trapped at home half the day if I am trying to get her to take a decent nap at home instead of in her carseat. If I try to go out during what is her "activity" time she passes out in the carseat but will not usually take a long nap in there anymore, instead kind of catnapping. Literally, the child could wake up, eat, then fall back asleep in there again. So, I feel when I do take her out she gets all messed up and then is crabby, etc. However, with a 3 year old in preschool, activities, etc. there is not much I can do on some days. I am getting really frustrated! Anyone else go through this? Does it get better, will she start staying more alert in her carseat or will the motion always knock her out? I don't really remember this with DS when he was a baby.

  • I didn't think it was a big deal to let a baby sleep for longer periods of time occasionally.  My LO sleeps in the car too.  She will stay passed out for a while, it has never upset me though.Good luck to you.

  • You're over thinking it.  Go about your business, let the kid sleep if he wants.  That's the best thing about this age...I could go out and do whatever I wanted and DS would sleep 90% of the time.

Def. agree. Be happy LO is asleep and go about getting your things done.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. DD is 3.5 months old and will rarely sleep in the carseat when we're out now. She will in the car a bit but if we're in a store she's wide awake.

  • If I am understanding you correctly you are saying that your DD doesn't nap well in her car seat??  This is us recently.  I feel like I can only take errands and go for a lunch date with my girlfriends if she has gotten a good morning nap.  The rule of thumb for my DD is if she takes a good morning nap the second one will probably be short anyway so I don't feel bad going out, but I make sure I am home for the 3rd and final nap.

  • Grass is always greener, I guess. DD screams bloody murder when she so much as looks at her carseat. What I wouldn't give to be able to put her in it to get out.

This is starting to happen to us too. If I were you, I'd enjoy the fact that your LO will pass out cold in there and stay out so that you can get stuff done. If you're that worried about it, I'd say you're thinking too hard about sticking to a "schedule" and at 6 weeks old, I wouldn't worry that much about it.
