breastmilk question... leaving LO alone for the first time

So i have in fact left LO's side at some point since he's been born. ;)

I've gone to the store for an hour or so while DH had him, but never this long. DH and I are shooting our first wedding since LO was born. My parents are going to spend the day with him at our home, which is great for LO's sake (he wont have to be in a strange place). I've been pumping since he was born to have back up and at first to help increase supply. he has taken a bottle before and has no problem with it (i was IN a wedding last month).

My question is, how do you know how much milk to give him? My mom is good with him and i'm not worried, but we're going to be gone from 7am until 2am (driving back that night). he feeds on demand right now. when he's hungry he eats. sometimes he snacks, other times he eats from both sides and finishes me off. so theres no real "schedule" with his eating.

any suggestions? thanks!

Re: breastmilk question... leaving LO alone for the first time

  • Here is what I would do...over the next 24 hours see how many times you feed him first of all. Then you figure about 3-4 oz per feeding. Then because sometimes he eats more than that to "fill up" I would lay out a couple extra bags. Remember if your mom runs out she can always get hot water in the sink/cup and thaw out  milk. No worries. BM is good for 24 hours once un-thawed so unthaw the minimum and then she can unthaw as necessary!! It will be ok, I always unthawed to much and would have to find a way to get it into him...so just go with the flow! Best of luck to you!

  • I agree with checking out kellymom. When I left DS overnight at about 6 weeks, he took a bottle much less often than he usually nursed. Especially if they are staying at your house, I would just defrost enough for the first 2 bottles and let them defrost additional as they need it.
