FB Vent

I have a "friend" on FB that has very strong opinions which she is very vocal about. That's fine - I'm opinionated too, though I try my hardest to keep them off of FB [hence the vent here Wink]...but today she really is grating on my nerves, putting up pictures/status updates/what not bashing Obama. And I really, really, really want to call her out...but I need to bite my tongue and shut up. But I can't, so I'm going to vent here.

I'm certainly not Obama's biggest fan, but the stuff she is posting is beyond RIDICULOUS and incredibly insulting, no matter what party you are aligned with.

Things like this:

and this...

Really? REALLY?

Let's be adults. Comparing our president to Hitler? REALLY!??

Re: FB Vent

  • Unfortunately, I have one or 2 of those types on my friends list too.  I understand your frustration - it's just not necessary IMO.  But it's their right to say/post it.  I'm almost at the point of blocking one of my friends who does this, because he almost never posts anything else.

  • Crap like that has made me unfriend before, especially if I'm not that close with the person.

I'm not arguing that it's not her right to post it, it just is totally unnecessary and wrong. I probably will block her by the end of the week b/c I just can't stand to see this shiit anymore - it doesn't stop with the president either. She has to throw her opinions about every controversial issue around on FB and I'm so over it!

  • Yuck! I cannot stand crap like that. ::defriend::
  • I couldn't help it. I posted...

"Really? Comparing our president to someone who killed millions of people? That's incredibly offensive, no matter whether you support our current administration or not."

  • I don't think I could bite my tongue hard enough to keep me from at least saying something regarding the Hitler reference.  I'd probably also defriend.  if it was just the douche poster, I'd roll my eyes and judge her behind her back, but that itself wouldn't cause a defriend.  comparing our president (who inherited a lot of $hit and is really trying to make our country better, even if it doesn't seem to be working all that well) to a man who literally murdered millions of people because of their race/religion/hair color is definitely enough to make me want to scream at the top of my lungs.

    Yes

  • imageMrsRosie:
The Hitler reference would be an automatic defriend for me.  I would tell her that is the reason why too.

Definitely tell her - I had to send a similar message to some friends/acquaintances that I defriended the day Obama was elected for racist comments. I have zero tolerance for people like that in my life.

I guess the situation would be different if it's someone you actually have to see on a regular basis, though.

  • Good for you for saying something.

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Wow.  I completely agree with your response.  Liberal or conservative that post is completely disgusting and ridic.  I have never unfriended over a status or post but I would 100% for a post like that.
  • aaaaaaaaand here's her response. I have no idea what to say...but defriending isn't exactly an option b/c I see her on a regular basis.

"Sorry you took offense. The point of the photo to me is to show how people back then were "tricked" by this great speaker and so many didn't know what they had gotten into until it was too late. I don't see that as stating - Hitler: a man who led the killing of so many innocent people equals Obama: a man who has done nothing positive yet and has been a terrible president. My point (and possibly the point of the person who created this) is don't be fooled by a couple of pretty pictures and good speeches. Actually pay attention because people fell for Hilter's song and dance then. Don't fall for Obama's now. The results won't be the same but they will still be negative."

Can you just hide her from your feed?  I've done that with a few people I can't really defriend, but who used to annoy me regularly.  Out of sight, (mostly) out of mind!

Sorry you have such an irritating acquaintance.  Good for you for saying something, though!  She seems to have spent a great deal of time thinking about that odious Obama=Hitler photo; maybe she'll do herself the favor of spending at least as much time thinking about your very diplomatic response and take it to heart.

  • oh loooord... this would not end well for me, so I don't know what I'd do.  well, I know I would respond back and then she would reply and it would go on and on because I have to have the last word.  I'm not recommending you act like I would.

maybe something short like "people don't remember hitler because of his wonderful speeches.  he's famous for murdering people.  the point of this poster is to scare people into thinking that because obama gives speeches and hitler did too, then the outcomes will be the same.  you're propagating this attitude and it's certainly not one that I want crowding my facebook wall.

I thought about that - but I don't want the debate to turn into whether Obama has been a good president or not. The issue I'm taking is that she's comparing him to Hitler.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to say - she's technically a client of mine too, though we've known each other since middle school and still attend the same church (where I'll run into her). We're friendly, but not friends, if that makes sense...I just don't want things to be awkward next time I see her, but at the same time, this is wrong and her argument is stupid too.

Yeah, it's easy for me to be big and bold when it's not actually happening to me. And I get your point. Maybe people (even myself) were just as negative regarding Bush, but I feel like the absolute hatred of Obama, the racist statements, and the inability to recognize the good that he has done frustrates me. I'm not saying he has accomplished everything I would have liked either, but I think it's also hard when you have a group of people absolutely railing against you and unwilling to even consider that you might have done anything good, and this is a reflection of that group of people.

Since she is someone it sounds like you will be seeing and a client, I would probably just hide her. That way she won't know and you won't have to see her crazyass stuff that she posts.

  • I would definitely hide her. I have someone like this too. I never say anything but I want too. Even if I did, it would be irritating, kind of like your situation with her response. I've posted an anti-Rick Perry joke on my wall before but I would never post something comparing someone to Hitler! (unless of course they were comparable!)

This is what I am thinking.  I don't think many people will read into the poster that much.  Much of propaganda isn't meant to be thought about for 20 minutes to figure it out.  It's meant to give the message quickly.  I would hide her.

Side note:  what is it about Hitler today.  One of my students said she was naming her new puppy:  first name Hitler, middle name Adolf.  I told her I was completely offended by this.  I don't really think she sees what the problem is with that.  She was all...it's my dog.  Ugg!!!!

  • I absolutely cannot stand when people use Hitler as a reference.  Hilter annihilated millions of people.  He attempted to wipe out an entire race of people from the earth. He was evil incarnate, a torturer and a madman. No one should compare a politician to him.  It's disrespectful to the millions who truly suffered.

I might just copy and paste that, because that is exactly how I feel!

  • Here's what I posted. She's hidden now - I'm sure she'll respond, but I'm moving on. Thank you abrooks for the wording! :)

You have a right to your own opinion - I just have to say one more thing and then I'll let it go...when people see an ad like this, they don't think of all the wonderful speeches Hitler gave and compare them to the wonderful speeches Obama gives. They think of the millions of people he annihilated.  He attempted to wipe out an entire race of people from the earth. He was evil incarnate, a torturer and a madman. No one should compare a politician to him - actually, no one should be compared to him unless they are doing those exact things.  It's disrespectful to the millions who truly suffered.

I feel the same way. Likewise, I cannot stand when people say that someone is a Nazi about something insignificant (ex. "She's a Nazi about having clean floors"). Please.

Libby, I'd defriend and not give her another moment's thought. If she really believes that Hitler rose to power because of speeches, she's an ignorant fool who couldn't pass ninth grade history.

Yes I think your response was perfect.
  • Her response back, just in case you're curious. I'm not posting anything back and I've already hid her from my feeds...I'm still super irked, but whatever. I hate that people believe things like this!!

"Everyone has their own view on what this picture says to them. To me it says what I stated and to you it says what you feel so...everyone feels differently."

  • You should just post this picture to her wall and be done with it.  Wink
