I know, I know....the rule is around 6 months. And believe me...I am MORE than happy to wait. Just formula is so easy and certainly not messy the way food will be. However, DS is up to 30 oz a day-with 5 6oz bottles. I can't give him 8oz because I feel like he will spit it up....and I really want feedings to be at least 3 and a half to four hours apart...with exceptions of course if he needs to eat. I am a schedule Mama....flame if you must.
So, who is thinking their LO will be ready and needing solids around 4 months?
Re: Who is thinking about solids? Obviously for older ones on this board....
I was thinking the same way as you are when DS1 was 4 months, so we gave some cereal a whirl. He let us know pretty quickly that he wasn't ready and we ended up being successful at 6 months. You can always try and see what happens.
Go Phils!!
I am not flaming you and I say this in the most non-snarky way possible, but I think this is a little selfish of you. Is it for your convenience? His hunger should be 100% responsible for setting up his schedule.
I get it, I am 100% a schedule/structure/routine kind of person, but I have definitely learnt to let that side of me go a little since having DS. Some things (such as young infants) cannot be forced on to a schedule (no matter how much my MIL says you can!) IMO. (I'm sure there are others who might disagree) I think at this age, it's important to follow your LO's cues, let him take the lead and just go with it.
This.

The main source of nutrition, at this age, is formula or breastmilk. Starting solids now would be a big waste of time. Sorry he is eating too often for you, but eventually it will space out to every 4 hours, just not at 2 months of age. Hang in there mama it does get better!
Our Dr mentioned at our last appt that we could start DD on solids any time between 4-6 months. I doubt that we'll try at 4, maybe 5. If she takes it great, if not, we'll wait.
She's gaining weight very slowly so I'm going to talk to the Dr at her 4 month appt in a couple weeks to see if starting solids might help her gain. She's 3.5 months old and barely 10lbs, still wearing newborn size jeans and they're too big!!
Baby food is not likely to help with weight gain. Formula or Breastmilk have much more nutrition/fat content and are the real source of what babies need well past even 6 months. Babies who eat too many solids too early actually often have weight gain problems.
Formula is metabolized very slowly and is much more calorie dense than anything else that you could feed an infant. Solids will not make your baby go longer between feedings, but will increase the time that it takes you to feed the baby.
Thank you for respectfully disagreeing : ) I personally think that eating every 3 and a half to four hours allows for a healthy sleep pattern to develop. A baby who is eating every 2 hours can't have time for 45 minutes to an hour of wake period plus a two hour nap-and I think that is best for babies. BUT I am open to throwing that idea out the window every once in a while when DS has hit a growth spurt or if he is just extra fussy.
Possibly....and maybe I will try to bump up the number of oz per bottle first. Pedi says eating every 3.5 hours allows for a healthy sleep schedule to form-with the exception of growth spurts and really fussy days.
I don't want LO to go longer between feedings because of convenience...but because cat napping makes my little man really fussy!
Umm, no. I am trying to find a way to help DS get to the 3.5 hour mark without being hungry. With that being said, I do think it's ok for babies to fuss for about 15 minutes before their time to feed. I distract DS with a walk to the mailbox or playing in the mirror.
We had a somewhat similar situation with DS (not the schedule issues - the weight issues). DS has always been in the 10-20th percentile for weight and I was EBF and was struggling to keep up with his demand. We started solids at 4 months and contrary to what PPs will have you believe he was totally fine with it. He didn't have "half a chance of being ready" - he was ready, the tongue reflux was minimal and completely gone within a week of starting. It helped a lot to keep him full - I still breastfed him the same number of times per day - but this was an addition to that.
You don't have to start with infant cereal, many many people start with bananas, sweet potatoes, etc. Good luck!
This is actually true of solids in general until closer to a year. Baby should still be getting most of his or her nutrients from BM/Formula until that time.
I don't get this thread. The OP asked if introducing solids would keep her kid healthy, happy and full for longer so that she could not spend every minute of the day feeding the baby.
Maybe I'm just sympathetic because I have a little chubber EBFer who eats every hour. I mean, I only really Bump when he's eating and I have 500 posts.
And it turned into how she's a terrible person because she's too important to be bothered with feeding her child. Huh?
