Does anyone here have a gun safe? We have a little one, but are going to be getting a big one as DH has some of the long guns in addition to the hand guns. Any recs?
We are looking to get a fire-safe one. But it is significantly more money the longer the fire proof it is. 30 min, vs 60 min, vs 2 hours. Missy, if it's not a pain, ask your dh - we live right in Gates off of Buf rd by 490. I feel like an hour would be plenty of time bc it is not like we live in the middle of no where. But I really have no idea how long it can take to get a fire under control. DH wants the 2 hr, but he tends to always want the "better" model.
Re: Gun safes (and Missy - a ?)
I would be less concerned with how long it takes to get a fire under control and more concerned with how fast you can get out of the house, kwim? If for some reason a fire breaks out close to the guns and you aren't really near them to know and the closest detector malfunctions...then it could be near flames for longer than you think.
I'd get the best one. And scrimp on something else
He would recommend the 1 hour safe. The safes are rated for direct exposure to heat more than a certain temperature (typcially 585 degrees C), which is usually direct fire exposure. If you are there when a fire happens (ie you hear the smoke alarms and you call the FD before the fire spreads too far) then the 30 min would be efficient. If you are not there when the fire starts, then there is a chance the fire will spread throughout the house b/f the FD gets there. And then you have where it starts, grease fires tend to run much hotter than a fire that starts off another consumable, such as paper. Therefore it burns quicker, faster and hotter.
Long story short, the 2 hour is better than the 1 hour (at those high temperatures) but there isn't many cases where, even if the entire house burnt down, that the safe would be exposed that long to that intense of heat. So the 60 minute safe would be ample. Our fireproof safe is a 60 minute safe. Sorry if I am rambling. I'm trying to put his looooong explanation into a post short enought to make sense and to write it down correctly.
Hope that helped.

Oh, we definitely will worry about getting out of the house first and foremost. The only way DH should be bringing a gun with him would be if he already had one on him, it won't be like he will be going back for them. We just need a bigger safe anyway, so it makes sense to get a fire-safe one too for certain papers and stuff.
Thanks Missy, I will read DH your reply too. I think that you guys having a 1 hour will help us compromise on getting the 1 hour as well.
I hadn't thought about this. Other than protecting your valuables, why buy a fireproof safe? I just did a little googling and am not sure what advantage you would have. Fireproof safes are not water proof, if you have a major fire, the fire dept would be straying mass amounts of water on your home and safe and you firearms would end up saturated. I would never want to take a risk and use that firearm again. I would think it would be better to get a safe that will keep the kids out, and increase you insurance coverage to cover them. Or am I missing something?
We have two Stack-on gun cases. One has the guns, the other has the ammunition. The keys to the safes are also kept in two separate safes, that happen to be fireproof but for the sake of the documents also in the safe.
Been doing more googling to see if I need a fireproof safe too. Seems if you keep your gun loaded, there would be some safety issues in a fire. If that is the case, I would buy a fireproof safe. But since we never keep them loaded, or even ammunition in the same area as the guns, I think we are good.
As far as the fireproof safe for papers, etc. We have two. One large one and one small one. The large on is bolted to the floor so it could never be removed by a theif, the small one is our original safe before we had more stuff, but we keep it in case we ever needed to evacuate our home for whatever reason that our house may be in jepordy. We could easily fill it with important papers and go with it.
