I'm personally more concerned if I wuss out and get an epidural I'll need to be catheterized to pee (the thought makes me cringe).
why would you need a cath if you get an epi? i never heard of that.
I have. I think if you get the kind where you can't walk to the bathroom, they cath you. It kind of freaks me out too, but I don't think you can feel it at that point b/c of the epi, so I guess it wouldn't be so bad.
If you get an epidural, you have to get a catheter because you won't be able to feel the urge to pee and most likely won't have control your legs to get to the bathroom.
I didn't read all the posts, so I apologize if someone else has already answered this.
I would like to add to this! Do you poop if you have a natural water birth?! I'm planning a water birth, but the idea of pooping in my own bath water is totally disgusting to me...
I have no idea if I pooped during my medicated birth with DS#1. I was on my back with my feet in the air. But with DS#2, I had an unmedicated L&D and I basically delivered his head on my own and don't remember any poop.
This issue terrified me when I was a FTM, but it really is a non-issue in the moment. Relax, ladies.
Don't stress out about this! I didn't poop the first time while pushing out twins med free, but I did when I had the epi, but I didn't even realize I pooped. The nurses removed it the second it feel out of my butt. My husband at the time didn't even realized I pooped until one of the nurses felt the need to announce it to him. At that point you are right at the finish line and it really doesn't even matter what comes out. I don't have this fright since I will hold a conversation with my husband in the bathroom while I sit on the toilet. I fart all the time, and we both giggle at the sounds my butt makes. My husband knows everything about me, including my yearly hemi issue. Having a baby will most likely change the modesty of your relationship and might help ya get over the shyness of poop and farts!
I pooped. I think the nurse had to wipe three times. I apologised later for all the poo! She didn't care at all. I actually knew when I went, but I don't think most people do. My husband wasn't watching me down there at that point so didn't see, but honestly I wouldn't have cared less. There is a lot of stuff coming out of you and you just don't care!
But I think it is pretty common (maybe about 50% of the time?) and I've heard that this is a problem with water births - they have to try to scoop up all the poo floating around or change the water. But they've seen it all before so really don't worry about it!
Also going for a NB (Med Free), and like some PP's (and my mother) have said, I've heard alot of "you're in the moment, you couldn't care less". That being said, I'm praying for pre-labor diarrhea and will probably refuse to leave the house w/o a BM after labor starts assuming it lasts as long as we're expecting.
Trust me, all inhibitions go out the window when you have a baby. In the moment you really won't care what anyone sees.
Ditto.
I couldn't even tell you how many people were in the room while I was pushing. I was really in the zone. MH tells me it was no less than 10. And I did not poop on the table. I'm not sure how, but I didn't.

Rude.
Agreed. Totally rude.
I don't think she was being rude. I think she just meant that for her personally, she was going to try for an epi-free birth and would feel like she'd chickened out if she got an epi. I didn't take it as her saying everyone who got an epi was a wuss.

Like I said, don't stress. Just live the moment.

Oh the glamour of giving birth, lol.
I guess it's pretty common to poop while giving birth, Ive asked all of my friends, and it has happened to all of them, with epidural or without.
