Babies: 3 - 6 Months

baby won't sleep in crib

I am trying to transition my LO to his crib. He will only sleep in it for about an hour at a time then wakes up flailing his body. I am guessing he is used to his bassinet that kind of squished him in in a way that he liked. A crib is so open. Anyone deal with this or have any suggestions? I just wonder if he will ever get over this.

  • He never did well with the swaddle and he is getting too big now. He rolls all over the place.

  • No advice..just support. We are transitioning DS to napping in crib as well. Our nap schedule yesterday was  30 mins, 15 mins, 1 hour and 5 minutes. I am with you hoping it gets better!! Night sleeping in crib has never been an issue for us. Good luck to you ans hope transitioning goes smoothly for you.

  • We are crib transitioning from the RNP.  I put a couple rolled up towels on both sides of DS under the crib sheet to make it feel smaller and more cozy and it seems to have helped. DH insisted we didn't need to do this and night #1 DS only slept 3 hours so I put the towels back in and night 2 & 3 he slept 12 hours. I am going to slowly move them out as time passes but I want to make sure he gets used to the crib first.

  • mrs. walker, I like that idea with the towels, however, i feel like my crib sheet is tight to the mattress I have. Do you know if they sell larger crib sheets?

  • I'm not sure but ours is tight too and I rolled the towels up pretty tight and squeezed it under there. I would have done anything for a little more sleep after the first night. Good Luck!

  • I'm in the same boat - trying to transition from the RNP. It's not going well. I think I will try the towels under the sheet. We tabled it for a few days and are going to try again this weekend.... sigh.

I'm also in the same boat. Why can't they just make a large RnP that my LO can sleep in until he's 5? I just spent the last hour trying to get him to nap in the crib and finally I gave up and put him in the RnP. Nap fail. I just need to quit that thing cold turkey. We should start a support group!

I bought the Fisher-Price waterfall crib soother and it does help him drift off to sleep. Our problem is staying asleep -- as soon as he drifts off, his legs jerk him awake.

  • We are going through the same thing except he won't sleep in the crib at all. He's been in the PNP bassinet, so I think its the same issue--that the crib is too flat.  And he doesn't like swaddling either.

I like the towel idea, I think I'll try it tonight. Although, it seems like its basically a sleep positioner which they say isn't safe. But he's rolling over now so I think it will be ok.

  • What are peoples thoughts on using one of those changing pads that are foamy? They have a contour to them. I am sure they are considered unsafe but I was curious if anyone has tried it.
