C-sections

3 years for a VBAC?

I called my OB today, since we never discussed how long to wait to get pregnant.  I probably thought at my six week appointment that I was one and done.  I also figured I'd just do a RCS. I thought my recovery would be better if I don't go into labor and I would know what to expect.

I'm slowly changing my mind, though. VBAC seems the healthiest route. FWIW: OB said I was an excellent canidate for a VBAC, even though I didn't go into labor on my own after my water broke, and I didn't dilate past 6 after 12 hours of Pit.

Anyway, I spoke with a nurse today, just because I was curious what my OB would recommend(we aren't ttcing at this exact moment).  She said 3 years between c-section and VBAC attempt would be ideal, although they understand that isn't always possible.  She did speak with the OB and returned my call(I wasn't home). I will call back on Monday to see what my OB really recommends.

Three years between deliveries sounds like a long time, even though we aren't TTCing at this exact moment.

  • I think we would all agree this is something that each of us have to dicuss individually with our OBs because there are different factors to consider but that said- My OB said I was also an excellent candidate for VBAC assuming I don't develop pre-e again. She also said I could safely try for VBAC if I waited a year to start trying for baby #2! That would put close to 22 months between deliveries if I got BFP around LOs first bday.

  • My doctor told me 18 months between deliveries.  I'll be basically 24 months in between deliveries and am trying to VBAC.

  • My doctor said to wait a year after birth before TTC again.  I asked about VBAC too, and that was still her answer.  Three years seems like a lot.

  • I was told 18 months delivery to delivery.

  • I was also told 18 months at the earliest between pregnancies to try for a VBAC. However I have read multiple stories of successful VBAC's earlier than that, I would be interested to know as to why your OB thinks 3 years? Also hop on over to the VBAC board if you have more questions on VBAC's! There are quite a few knowledgable women who have also had successful VBAC's and they are great with all of the researched information they've found!

  • My doctor would have let me VBAC if I went into labor naturally and my deliveries were under 13 months apart.

If you want kids closer than 3 years apart and VBAC is important to you, I'd call around and find another doctor who would be on board with your family plans and VBAC.

  • I feel the time between should be determined on an individual basis.  I was told I could get pregnant when I wanted and could try for a vbac.  But I also had a very easy healthy pregnancy, didn't even swell.  The only reason I had a c/s was that DD flipped breech right at the end.  I already was 5.5 cm and 100% zero station too, not in labor.  So it looks like my body was ready to go!
  • Thanks ladies. She is the only one in the are who performs them. She will let women try for a VBAC prior to the 3 year mark(I had a friend try around the 18 month mark, but failed), but it sounds like she feels there is a better success rate if you wait. I'm anxious to speak to the nurse and see what she said. Maybe the nurse was misinformed?

  • I've always heard 18-24 months, never 3 years.

By the way, we have a separate board here for VBAC, feel free to come post over there. :)

I think 18 months is actually the standard recommendation.

Some good links about more VBAC info:

You might also want to find your local ICAN group and see how VBAC-friendly your current OB is.

  • The research says that 18-24 months between deliveries reduces the risk of uterine rupture, and increases the success rate. I don't *think* any longer of an interval produces any additional benefit, but I'm not 100% sure.

  • The information I received from my MWs office claims you have a better chance of a successful VBAC if there are at least 2 years between births. My births will be almost exactly 2 years apart.

  • I can't remember what my OB said, but I had my boys 18 months apart and VBAC'd successfully.  Good Luck to you!

  • Thanks ladies! I spoke with the nurse again today. She said my OB believes a VBAC is best if I wait to get pregnant 16 months after my c-section. That means in four months, I can TTC(well, we could try now, but we aren't ready).  It is so interesting the differences in OB's. Oh, and I totally get that if we get pregnant after the 16 month mark, it doesn't mean a VBAC is 100%, not even close. I just want to have the best shot at having one.

I do lurk on the VBAC board. Once I get pregnant(if we decide on number 2), I will post there!

  • I am suprised they consider you an "excellent" candidate for VBAC considering the things you mentioned. That aside, my OB says 2 years is ideal. I am attempting VBAC when DS will be 22mo.
